It was built for the Oblates of St Mary Immaculate by Peter Paul Pugin and Cuthbert Pugin to designs by their brother Edward Welby Pugin - Edward had planned a south-west tower but this was never built. Its foundation stone was laid on 9 May 1875 by James Brown, Bishop of Shrewsbury and the church was opened on 28 October 1877. A presbytery was added between 1884 and 1885 and side aisles in 1934. The parish was served by the Oblates until it transferred the church to the Diocese of Shrewsbury in September 2010. [1] The parish is currently served by Fr. Bernard Forshaw and Rev. John Boggan. Augustus Welby Northmore Pugin was an English architect, designer, artist and critic who is principally remembered for his pioneering role in the Gothic Revival style of architecture. His work culminated in designing the interior of the Palace of Westminster in Westminster, London, England, and its iconic clock tower, later renamed the Elizabeth Tower, which houses the bell known as Big Ben. Pugin designed many churches in England, and some in Ireland and Australia. He was the son of Auguste Pugin, and the father of Edward Welby Pugin and Peter Paul Pugin, who continued his architectural firm as Pugin & Pugin. He also created Alton Castle in Alton, Staffordshire.
Edward Welby Pugin was an English architect, the eldest son of architect Augustus Welby Northmore Pugin and Louisa Barton and part of the Pugin & Pugin family of church architects. His father was an architect and designer of Neo-Gothic architecture, and after his death in 1852 Edward took up his successful practice. At the time of his own early death in 1875, Pugin had designed and completed more than one hundred Catholic churches.
Alton Castle is a Gothic-revival castle, on a hill above the Churnet Valley, in the village of Alton, Staffordshire, England. The site has been fortified since Saxon times, with the original castle dating from the 12th century. The current castle was constructed in the mid-19th century by John Talbot, 16th Earl of Shrewsbury, of nearby Alton Towers. Since 1967 the castle has been designated a Grade I listed building.
