A statue of Christopher Columbus is installed in Pittsburgh's Schenley Park, in the U.S. state of Pennsylvania.

Description and history

The 50-foot tall bronze and granite statue was designed by the Italian American sculptor Frank Vittor and installed in 1958. [1] In 2020, the sculpture was covered and the Pittsburgh Art Commission voted unanimously in favor of its removal. [1] [2]

Formerly sited along Forbes Avenue near the entrance of Carnegie Museum of Natural History, in the shadow of Dippy, a life-size sculpture of a Diplodocus dinosaur, and in close proximity to the University of Pittsburgh's Stephen Foster Memorial, the Foster statue is one of the city's best known and most controversial. It was removed on April 26, 2018 on the unanimous vote of the Pittsburgh Art Commission.

Christopher Columbus is a bronze statue of Italian explorer and navigator Christopher Columbus. It was installed during 1933 in Chicago's Grant Park, in the U.S. state of Illinois. Created by the Milanese-born sculptor Carlo Brioschi, it was set on an exedra and pedestal designed with the help of architect Clarence H. Johnston. It was removed and put in storage in 2020.

An outdoor 1992 bronze sculpture of Christopher Columbus by Joe Incrapera was installed in Houston's Bell Park, in the U.S. state of Texas. It was later removed in 2020 after a history of vandalism.

The statue was removed by the city in June 2020 to prevent its toppling in a Black Lives Matter protest.
