The Gus A. Stavros Institute is an organization founded in 1989 and named after Gus Stavros. [1] Located in Clearwater in Pinellas County, Florida, the institute is partnered with the Pinellas Education Foundation to run Enterprise Village and Finance Park, two economic educational programs.

Programs

Enterprise Village

Enterprise Village was first proposed by former associate Superintendent of Education Dr. Howard Hinesley after visiting Exchange City, an economic educational facility in the form of a simulated town in Kansas City. [2] [3] It was determined that state money could not be used to support a similar venture in Pinellas County, Florida, so the funds for Enterprise Village were raised by a coalition of local business leaders led by Gus A. Stavros. [2]

Established in 1989, Enterprise Village is designed for fifth-grade students. [4] After six weeks of in-classroom learning, fifth-grade students at participating Pinellas County schools visit Enterprise Village, an indoor facility of various artificial stores, where they learn to write checks, use debit cards, and apply for and work at mock-up versions of partnered companies like CVS Pharmacy, Home Shopping Network, McDonald's, the Tampa Bay Times, and Verizon. [5] [6] During their breaks, the students can become consumers, being able to walk around the other stores and buy items with the artificial money they received from working at their jobs. [7] [8] In the early 2000s, students could work at mock-ups of a Blockbuster Video and an Eckerd Drug Store, [9] but those now-defunct sponsors have since been replaced.

In 2002, baseball outfielder Jason Tyner was optioned from the Tampa Bay Devil Rays to a Triple-A team, resulting in the cancellation of a promotional giveaway involving 10,000 bobbleheads of Tyner. [10] After sitting in storage for some time, many of the bobbleheads were eventually donated to Enterprise Village. [11]

Finance Park

Finance Park is the eighth-grade equivalent of Enterprise Village, serving around 10,000 local students annually. [12] Modeled after the success of Enterprise Village, Finance Park has a focus on mathematics and decision-making skills, with the aim of teaching students how to manage a household budget, including insurance, transportation, healthcare, entertainment, utilities, and other expenses. [4] [13] [14] [15] Students participating at Finance Park are challenged to pay all of their bills and balance their checkbooks by the end of their visit. [8] In October 2018, a facility representing the YMCA was opened in Finance Park. David Jezek, president and CEO of the YMCA of Greater St. Petersburg, stated that "We are thrilled to partner in this manner, enhancing our impact on middle school students through financial literacy and health". [12]

The school previously occupied several other historic locations around St. Petersburg, including a location at Mirror Lake (1919–1926).

Gibbs High School is a public high school of the Pinellas County School District in St. Petersburg, Florida. Gibbs is home to the Pinellas County Center for the Arts (PCCA), Business, Economics, and Technology Academy (BETA) and their television production in Communication Arts. The school is named for Jonathan Clarkson Gibbs, a black man who was Superintendent of Public Instruction and Secretary of State in Florida during the Reconstruction era. Gibbs' current principal is Barry Brown.

Mavericks High Schools are a group of for-profit charter schools in Florida operated by Mavericks in Education, an organization headquartered in West Palm Beach, in Greater Miami, in the United States.

The St. Petersburg Library System is a free public library system for residents of the city of St. Petersburg, Florida, located in Pinellas County. The St. Petersburg Library System is part of the Pinellas Public Library Cooperative and consists of 7 branch locations.

The Pinellas Education Foundation is a nonprofit organization founded in 1986. Based in Clearwater in Pinellas County, Florida, the foundation's primary aims are to improve educational opportunities in Pinellas County schools and improve the quality of public education. The foundation has raised over $140 million to support students and teachers in Pinellas County. The Pinellas Education Foundation has been ranked first in the annual national study and ranking of K-12 Education Foundations for three consecutive years.

Gus A. Stavros was an American businessman and philanthropist. He founded the company Better Business Forms in the 1960s and later sold it. He founded the Stavros Institute and was a founding chairman of the Pinellas Education Foundation to improve the quality of local public education. He also served on the board of trustees of the University of South Florida and the governing board of USF St. Petersburg. He was also a part-owner of the Tampa Bay Rays baseball team.

Pinellas High School was a public high school from 1934 until 1968 in Clearwater, Florida. It served African Americans from the surrounding area of northern Pinellas County including Largo, Clearwater, Dunedin, Safety Harbor and Tarpon Springs during the era of segregation. It was at 1220 Palmetto Street. During its existence, it was the first segregated school in the region and it was the only school exclusively serving Black students in Pinellas County.

<span class="mw-page-title-main">Bob Gualtieri</span> American law enforcement officer

Robert A. "Bob" Gualtieri is an American law enforcement officer, lawyer and politician who is serving as the 15th and current sheriff of Pinellas County, Florida. He previously served as Chief Deputy and General Counsel to PCSO under Sheriff Jim Coats. Gualtieri was appointed Sheriff by Governor Rick Scott in 2011 to succeed Coats. Gualtieri was elected to the office in his own right in 2012, and was re-elected in 2016. He is a member of the Republican Party.
