Stefan Altner (born in 1956) is a German musician, musicologist and cultural manager.

Life

Born in Brandis, Altner was a member of the Thomanerchor from 1966 to 1975 and attended the St. Thomas School in Leipzig. He then studied church music, e.g. organ with Thomas organist Hannes Kästner, piano with Herbert Sahling and basso continuo and harpsichord with Walter Heinz Bernstein, at the Leipzig Conservatory and, after graduating with a diploma in church music, worked as church musician in Zossen.

After a successful application for exit  [ de ] from the GDR, he moved to Munich in 1984. Altner then worked as literary editor for the Bärenreiter publishing house. From 1986 to 1993 he was managing director of the Munich Chamber Orchestra and harpsichordist among the baroque soloists of the Munich Philharmonic. From 1993 to 2019 he was managing director of the Thomanerchor. [1]

In 2005, he received his first doctorate as Dr. phil. at the Leipzig University of Music and Theatre, supervised by Johannes Forner [2] Altner is chairman of the board of the Thomanerchor Foundation. [3] and co-initiator of the Leipzig education campus Forum Thomanum. [4] He is also on the supervisory board of the Leipziger Blätter . [5]

Thomanerchor Boys choir in Leipzig

The Thomanerchor is a boys' choir in Leipzig, Germany. The choir was founded in 1212. The choir comprises about 90 boys from 9 to 18 years of age. The members, called Thomaner, reside in a boarding school, the Thomasalumnat and attend the St. Thomas School, Leipzig, a Gymnasium school with a linguistic profile and a focus on musical education. The younger members attend the primary school 76. Grundschule in der Manetstraße. Johann Sebastian Bach served as Thomaskantor, director of the choir and church music in Leipzig, from 1723 to 1750.

Georg Christoph Biller German choral conductor

Georg Christoph Biller was a German choral conductor. He conducted the Thomanerchor as the sixteenth Thomaskantor since Johann Sebastian Bach from 1992 to 2015. He was also a baritone, an academic teacher, and a composer. Active as Thomaskantor after the German reunification, Biller returned the Thomanerchor to its original focus on church music. He was instrumental in the new buildings for the choir's boarding school, the Forum Thomanum, and in the celebration of its 800th anniversary in 2012.

Thomaskantor Musical director of the Thomanerchor

Thomaskantor is the common name for the musical director of the Thomanerchor, now an internationally known boys' choir founded in Leipzig in 1212. The official historic title of the Thomaskantor in Latin, Cantor et Director Musices, describes the two functions of cantor and director. As the cantor, he prepared the choir for service in four Lutheran churches, Thomaskirche, Nikolaikirche, Neue Kirche and Peterskirche. As director, he organized music for city functions such as town council elections and homages. Functions related to the university took place at the Paulinerkirche. Johann Sebastian Bach was the most famous Thomaskantor, from 1723 to 1750.

Gottfried Vopelius

Gottfried Vopelius, was a German Lutheran academic and hymn-writer, mainly active in Leipzig. He was born in Herwigsdorf, now a district of Rosenbach, Oberlausitz, and died in Leipzig at the age of 70.

St. Matthew, Leipzig Church

St. Matthew was a church in the old town of Leipzig. During its history it had several names and functions. As a church of the Franciscan order, built in 1488, it was known as Barfüßerkirche and Heiliggeistkirche. It served as a Lutheran church, known as Neukirche, from 1699. A new congregation formed in 1876 and named the church Matthäikirche. The building was destroyed in a bombing in 1943.

The Forum Thomanum is a music educational campus founded in 2002 in Leipzig, Saxony, Germany. It is the home of the Thomanerchor which was founded in 1212 and conducted by Johann Sebastian Bach from 1723. The institution is internationally oriented, and unique in Germany, based at the Thomashaus. A project of the city of Leipzig, it has been recognised as innovative. Its concept was to care for the future of the tradition of the "Thomana" formed by Thomaskirche, Thomanerchor and Thomasschule, investing in education. Historic buildings were modernised and expanded, and new buildings added. The city estimated the total investment as Euro 30 million. The campus was inaugurated in 2012, for the 800th anniversary of the Thomanerchor.
