Steffen Zillich (born 16 July 1971) is a German politician for The Left and since 2016 member of the Abgeordnetenhaus of Berlin, the state parliament of Berlin.

Politics

Zillich was born 1971 in Berlin and studied law for eight years, then become a member of the Abgeordnetenhaus in 2016. [1]

All Berlin residents who are 16 years and older, hold EU citizenship, have lived there for three months and were registered six weeks before the election are eligible to vote for the districts' assemblies. In order to be eligible to vote for the parliament of Berlin (Abgeordnetenhaus), one has to be 18 years old and hold German citizenship, too. Only those under disability or in psychiatric wards are excluded. Courts of justice also have the possibility to revoke the right to vote.

The 2016 Berlin state election was held on 18 September 2016 to elect the members to the 18th Abgeordnetenhaus of Berlin. The incumbent grand coalition of the Social Democratic Party (SPD) and Christian Democratic Union (CDU) was defeated, with both parties suffering significant losses. The Left became the third largest party, while the fourth-placed Greens suffered losses. Alternative for Germany (AfD) won seats for the first time. The Free Democratic Party (FDP) re-entered the Abgeordnetenhaus after falling out in the 2011 election. The Pirate Party, which had achieved state-level representation for the first time in the previous election, lost all of its seats.
