Stephanie Moser is an Australian archaeologist and academic. She is a professor and head of the department at the University of Southampton, England. Her work explores the exhibition and reception of the human past. Moser's research examines visual images from antiquity through the lens of modern anthropology.
Her B.A. was completed in 1989 at La Trobe University, Melbourne.[ citation needed ] In 1995, Moser was awarded a Ph.D in archaeology from the University of Sydney, with a thesis is entitled Archaeology and its disciplinary culture: The Professionalisation of Australian Archaeology.[ citation needed ]
Since 1995, Moser has been a professor of archaeology at the University of Southampton, England. Moser is a member of the Society of Antiquaries of London. [1] She served as Council Member for the Society of Antiquaries from 2013 to 2016, and is a member of the Antiquity Trust, which supports the publication of the archaeology journal Antiquity. [2]
For her thesis, Archaeology and its Disciplinary Culture: The Professionalization of Australia's Prehistoric Archaeology, Moser describes how professional archaeologists used their newfound methods and culture to exclude amateurs from their trade. [3] Archaeologists, according to Moser's thesis, need to go into "the field" to become "real" archaeologists. [4]
Establishing archaeological representation as a research field within anthropology was Moser's first major research enterprise. For "The visual language of archaeology: a case study of the Neanderthals," she investigated how one artist's depiction of Homo sapiens Neanderthalensis single-handedly forged our modern impression of the species. Since the late 1990s Moser has investigated how Ancient Egypt has been represented in 19th century England. [6] In addition to this, in 2002, she published a paper on how to collaborate with indigenous populations in the presentation of their cultural heritage. [7] In "Transforming Archaeology Through Practice: Strategies for Collaborative Archaeology and the Community at Quseir, Egypt," Moser and her colleagues outlined inclusive methods archaeologists should adopt when investigating people's heritage. [8] [9] The basis of the paper stemmed from Moser's training in Australia which involved working with Australia's indigenous people. [ citation needed ]
Moser's other research deals with how the mechanisms of museum displays contribute to knowledge. [10] She addresses the interplay of exhibition analysis, art collecting, and archaeological representation. [11]
In 2019, Moser was investigating the roots of archaeological illustration at the Society of Antiquaries of London and how it was used to facilitate their research ventures. [12] Moser was also researching Egyptologist and artist Joseph Bonomi and the ways he contributed to the understanding of ancient Egypt.[ citation needed ]
Prehistoric archaeology is a subfield of archaeology, which deals specifically with artefacts, civilisations and other materials from societies that existed before any form of writing system or historical record. Often the field focuses on ages such as the Stone Age, Bronze Age and Iron Age, although it also encompasses periods such as the Neolithic. The study of prehistoric archaeology reflects the cultural concerns of modern society by showing interpretations of time between economic growth and political stability. It is related to other disciplines such as geology, biology, anthropology, historiography and palaeontology, although there are noticeable differences between the subjects they all broadly study to understand; the past, either organic or inorganic or the lives of humans. Prehistoric archaeology is also sometimes termed as anthropological archaeology because of its indirect traces with complex patterns.
Gender archaeology is a method of studying past societies through their material culture by closely examining the social construction of gender identities and relations.
Feminist archaeology employs a feminist perspective in interpreting past societies. It often focuses on gender, but also considers gender in tandem with other factors, such as sexuality, race, or class. Feminist archaeology has critiqued the uncritical application of modern, Western norms and values to past societies. It is additionally concerned with increasing the representation of women in the discipline of archaeology, and reducing androcentric bias within the field.
Archaeological ethics refers to the moral issues raised through the study of the material past. It is a branch of the philosophy of archaeology. This article will touch on human remains, the preservation and laws protecting remains and cultural items, issues around the globe, as well as preservation and ethnoarchaeology.
In archaeology, a typology is the result of the classification of things according to their physical characteristics. The products of the classification, i.e. the classes, are also called types. Most archaeological typologies organize portable artifacts into types, but typologies of larger structures, including buildings, field monuments, fortifications or roads, are equally possible. A typology helps to manage a large mass of archaeological data. According to Doran and Hodson, "this superficially straightforward task has proved one of the most time consuming and contentious aspects of archaeological research".
Gertrude Caton Thompson, was an English archaeologist at a time when participation by women in the discipline was uncommon. Much of her archaeological work was conducted in Egypt. However, she also worked on expeditions in Zimbabwe, Malta, and South Arabia. Her notable contributions to the field of archaeology include creating a technique for excavating archaeological sites and information on Paleolithic to Predynastic civilizations in Zimbabwe and Egypt. Caton Thompson held many official positions in organizations such as the Prehistoric Society and the Royal Anthropological Institute.
Ruth Tringham is an anthropologist, focusing on the archaeology of Neolithic Europe and southwest Asia. She is a Professor of the Graduate School (Anthropology) at the University of California, Berkeley and Creative Director and President of the Center for Digital Archaeology (CoDA), a recently established non-profit organization. Before going to Berkeley, she taught at Harvard University and University College London. Tringham is probably best known for her work at Selevac (1976–1979) and Opovo (1983–1989), Serbia, at the Eneolithic tell settlement of Podgoritsa, Bulgaria (1995), and at the well-known site of Çatalhöyük (1997-), Turkey.
Claire Smith, is an Australian archaeologist specialising in Indigenous archaeology, symbolic communication and rock art. She was dean (research) of the College of Humanities, Arts and Social Sciences at Flinders University in 2017-2018 and, before that, head of the Department of Archaeology. She was president of the World Archaeological Congress from 2003 to 2014. Among her many publications is the Encyclopedia of Global Archaeology.

Archaeology can be considered both a social science and a branch of the humanities. It is usually considered an independent academic discipline, but may also be classified as part of anthropology, history or geography.
Indigenous archaeology is a sub-discipline of Western archaeological theory that seeks to engage and empower indigenous people in the preservation of their heritage and to correct perceived inequalities in modern archaeology. It also attempts to incorporate non-material elements of cultures, like oral traditions, into the wider historical narrative. This methodology came out of the global anti-colonial movements of the 1970s and 1980s led by aboriginal and indigenous people in settler-colonial nations, like the United States, Canada, and Australia. Major issues the sub-discipline attempts to address include the repatriation of indigenous remains to their respective peoples, the perceived biases that western archaeology's imperialistic roots have imparted into its modern practices, and the stewardship and preservation of indigenous people's cultures and heritage sites. This has encouraged the development of more collaborative relationships between archaeologists and indigenous people and has increased the involvement of indigenous people in archaeology and its related policies.
Sada Mire is a Swedish-Somali archaeologist, art historian and presenter from the Arap clan, who is currently a professor of Heritage Studies at University College London. She is a public intellectual and heritage activist who has argued that cultural heritage is a basic human need in her 2014 TEDxEuston talk. In 2017, Hay Festival of Literature and the Arts selected Mire as one of their 30 international thinkers and writers. She became the Director of Antiquities of Somaliland in 2007. Raised in the Somali capital of Mogadishu, Mire fled the country at the start of the civil war at the age of 15. She then traveled to Sweden seeking asylum. She has since returned to the Horn of Africa as an archaeologist.

She was able to archeologically confirm that chocolate was a byproduct of fermenting beer. She is also an expert in evaluating the archaeological records of society and the implications that sexuality and gender play in culture.
Alice Stevenson is a British archaeologist and museum curator. She is Professor of Museum Archaeology at UCL's Institute of Archaeology and a specialist in Predynastic and Early Dynastic Egyptian archaeology.

She previously worked as assistant director of the British Institute in Eastern Africa (2005-2008) and remains a Trustee and Member of the BIEA Governing Council. In 2016, Wynne-Jones was elected to Fellowship of the Society of Antiquaries of London. Wynne-Jones is one of the Core Group at the Danish National Research Foundation Centre of Excellence in Urban Network Evolutions (Urbnet), Aarhus University. Between 2015 and 2017 she was a Pro Futura Scientia Fellow at the Swedish Collegium for Advanced Study, Uppsala.

She is an Honorary Research Associate at UCL.
