Robert James Fischer was an American chess grandmaster and the eleventh World Chess Champion. A chess prodigy, he won his first of a record eight US Championships at the age of 14. In 1964, he won with an 11–0 score, the only perfect score in the history of the tournament. Qualifying for the 1972 World Championship, Fischer swept matches with Mark Taimanov and Bent Larsen by 6–0 scores. After winning another qualifying match against Tigran Petrosian, Fischer won the title match against Boris Spassky of the USSR, in Reykjavík, Iceland. Publicized as a Cold War confrontation between the US and USSR, the match attracted more worldwide interest than any chess championship before or since.

Zhang Pengxiang is a Chinese chess grandmaster and the 2007 Asian Chess Champion. In 2001, he became China's 12th Grandmaster. Zhang's peak rating was 2657 in April 2007 when he was ranked 47th in the world.
Bryan Cullen is an Irish former Gaelic footballer who played as a left wing-forward at senior level for the Dublin county team. Cullen announced his retirement on 9 January 2015. The Leinster Chess Championship is an annual chess competition in Ireland, which was first played in 1912. It is run by the Leinster Chess Union and the winner is declared Leinster Champion. In recent years the competition has been in conjunction with another tournament, the City of Dublin (1999), the Irish Open and since 2012 as part of the Malahide Millennium Chess tournament.
Sergei Zhigalko is a Belarusian chess player who holds the FIDE title of Grandmaster. He is a three-time national champion and also a European and world champion in his age category. Zhigalko competed in the FIDE World Cup in 2007, 2011, 2015 and 2017.
Sam E. Collins is an Irish chess player. He was awarded the title International Master by FIDE in 2004.
