Western Soccer Alliance was a professional soccer league featuring teams from the West Coast of the United States and Western Canada. The league began in 1985 as the Western Alliance Challenge Series. In 1986, it became the Western Soccer Alliance. In 1989, it existed for a single year as the Western Soccer League before merging with the American Soccer League to form the American Professional Soccer League in 1990.

Portland Timbers, previously known as F.C. Portland, came into existence in 1985 as an independent U.S. soccer team based in Portland, Oregon. In 1989, the team adopted the name Portland Timbers. Portland was composed of both professional and amateur players. The amateur players largely came from local Portland amateur leagues. It played its games in Portland's Civic Stadium.
Scott "Benny" Benedetti is an American retired soccer player. He began his professional career with the semi-professional F.C. Portland in 1986 and ended it with the U.S. second division club Portland Timbers in 2005. While he spent most of his career in the U.S. divisions, he had just over a season in Major League Soccer and half a season in the Primera División de México with UNAM Pumas. He earned one cap with the U.S. national team in 1996. He played in such places as South Korea, Thailand, England, Austria and Scotland.
John Bain is a Scottish retired-US soccer midfielder who currently coaches youth soccer in the United States. Bain began his professional career in England before moving to the United States in 1978. Over his twenty-year playing career, Bain played for numerous leagues and teams, both indoors and out. After retiring from playing professionally, he has coached at the professional, youth club and high school levels in the US.
Wade Webber is an American soccer coach and former player who spent most of his career with clubs in the Pacific Northwest. However, he did see three years in Major League Soccer with the Dallas Burn and Miami Fusion before suffering a career ending knee injury. He is currently head coach of MLS Next Pro club Tacoma Defiance.
Greg Maas is a retired U.S. soccer goalkeeper who spent his entire professional career in Portland. He was the head coach of the Utah Valley University men's soccer team, starting the program from scratch. The team begins play in 2014 and competes in the Western Athletic Conference (WAC). Utah Valley has the only NCAA Division I men's soccer program in the state of Utah. He now serves as an academy coach mentor and senior boys and girls director of goalkeeping for the Washington Timbers a founding member of the Portland Timbers Alliance.
Joe Leonetti is a former U.S. soccer player. He played for numerous soccer teams over a career which began in 1988 with F.C. Portland and ended in 1999 with the Willamette Valley Firebirds. He also earned two caps with the U.S. national team in 1992 and 1996.
Michael Hoban is a former professional soccer player who played as a midfielder. He began his career with [[Aston Villa] F.C.|Aston Villa]] in 1969 before moving to the North American Soccer League in 1971. He still lives in the States more than 40 years later and has worked as a football coach there since retiring. Born in England, he earned one cap with the US national team in 1973.
Garrett Smith is an American former soccer defender who played professionally in the Western Soccer League, American Professional Soccer League, Major Indoor Soccer League and Continental Indoor Soccer League. Since 1992, he has served as an assistant coach with the University of Portland's men's and women's soccer teams. In 2003, he became the head coach of the women's team, winning the 2005 National Championship. He was 2007 NCAA Coach of the Year.
Dick McCormick is a former American soccer player and current youth soccer coach. McCormick played as a midfielder in six indoor and outdoor leagues over his fourteen-year professional career. He has served as an assistant coach with the Seattle Sounders and head coach of the Sounders W-League women's team in the 2000s. He is currently the Director of Coaching with the Crossfire Premier soccer club.
Paul James Conway is a retired American soccer player who played as a forward. He spent five seasons in the English lower divisions before returning to the United States. In 2001, he was the United Soccer Leagues leading goal scorer and MVP. Conway is also the all-time leading scorer for the Charleston Battery with whom he played from 1998 to 2004.
Brian McManus is a Scottish former football midfielder who is currently a Director of Coaching for the La Jolla Impact Select soccer club and the head coach of the UC San Diego women's soccer team. He is a four-time NCAA Coach of the Year and has led UC San Diego to seven national championships. He also played in Scotland, one season in the Western Soccer Alliance and one in the American Professional Soccer League.
Jeff Enquist was a U.S. soccer forward who played two seasons in the Western Soccer League, one in the American Professional Soccer League and one in the USISL. He has coached extensively at the professional, collegiate and high school levels. He is currently the president of the Portland Youth Soccer Association and the head coach of the Portland City United Soccer Club.
Darren Sawatzky is an American soccer coach and former player who is currently the head coach of the Richmond Kickers in USL League One. He spent four seasons in Major League Soccer, one season in the Major Indoor Soccer League, one in USISL and five in the United Soccer Leagues. He currently holds several coaching positions at the high school, collegiate and professional levels and was the Director of Youth Development for Seattle Sounders FC of Major League Soccer. In January 2015, he was named head coach of the Tacoma Stars of the Major Arena Soccer League.
Roger Gantz is an American retired soccer midfielder who played one season in the Western Soccer Alliance and three in the Continental Indoor Soccer League.
Steve Reese is a former American soccer player who currently coaches at the Portland Timbers academy.
Jim Brazeau is a retired American soccer goalkeeper. He played one season in the American Professional Soccer League and five in the Continental Indoor Soccer League. He earned the first shutout in CISL history on August 25, 1993.
The history of the Portland Timbers stretches back to 1975, when the original Timbers club joined the North American Soccer League, to the present club that plays in Major League Soccer.
