Steve James Broad (born 29 January 1986) is a New Zealand singer and radio presenter, known for coming 5th on the second season of the New Zealand edition of The X Factor and 3rd on the second season of New Zealand Idol . He was elected to the Invercargill City Council in 2023.

Early life

Broad was born in Invercargill in 1986, growing up on a sheep farm. [1] As a teen he worked at H & J Smith. [2]

Career

Broad competed in the second season of New Zealand Idol at the age of 19, eventually placing 3rd. Despite doing well in the competition, Broad later spoke of nearly giving up on music due to criticism from the media and the public. [3] [4] Two years later, Broad competed in Pop's Ultimate Star against other former reality television contestants. [5] He placed 8th. Broad worked for The Edge in Auckland while he studied law before switching to a teaching degree, which he completed back in Invercargill after five years. He then got a job teaching at Southland Boys' High School. [2] [4] [6] In 2012, he contested a by-election for the Invercargill City Council prompted by the resignation of Jackie Kruger, coming third with 2,453 votes. [7]

After performing in some local theatre and uploading cover songs to YouTube, in 2015 Broad decided to compete in the second series of New Zealand's The X Factor , [3] where he was placed in Melanie Blatt's Over 25s group. He was eliminated in the quarter-final, placing 5th. [4] After The X Factor, Broad moved back to Auckland to teach at Remuera Primary School. There he was flatmates with The Bachelor New Zealand contestant Gabrielle Davenport and Treasure Island contestant Carolyn Taylor. [8] [9] He later moved back to Invercargill to work as a radio host on More FM and then to Christchurch to work as a MediaWorks New Zealand manager. [2] He returned to hosting More FM in Invercargill after his mother died in 2021. [1]

In 2023, he again contested a by-election for the Invercargill City Council, this time prompted by the resignation of Nigel Skelt. [10] He was successfully elected, with a margin of over 1,000 votes ahead of second place. [11]

Personal life

Broad came out as gay after The X Factor, during which there had been frequent media speculation of his relationship with judge Melanie Blatt. He is a Christian, having attended Pentecostal and Presbyterian churches since his youth. [1]

ILT Stadium Southland is a multi-purpose venue located in Surrey Park, Invercargill, Southland, New Zealand. It was originally the home venue of the Southern Sting netball team. It currently serves as the main home venue of both the Southern Steel netball team and Southland Sharks of New Zealand's National Basketball League. It has also occasionally served a home venue for both the New Zealand national netball team and for New Zealand Breakers of Australia's National Basketball League. The venue is owned by Southland Indoor Leisure Centre Charitable Trust and the Invercargill Licensing Trust has the naming rights. Stadium Southland was originally opened in 2000. Following a roof collapse in 2010, it was redeveloped in 2014. The SIT Zero Fees Velodrome, which was opened in 2006, is adjacent to the main stadium complex. As well as hosting netball and basketball matches and tournaments, Stadium Southland has also hosted music concerts and tennis, badminton, boxing and wrestling events.

The SIT Zero Fees Velodrome, previously known as the ILT Velodrome and also known as the Invercargill Velodrome, is an indoor velodrome located in Surrey Park, Invercargill, Southland, New Zealand. It is next door to the ILT Stadium Southland and is part of the same complex. It is the main home venue of Cycling Southland and it serves as a training facility for three Invercargill sporting franchises – Southland Stags, Southland Sharks and Southern Steel. The velodrome was originally opened in 2006. The venue is owned by Southland Indoor Leisure Centre Charitable Trust. Invercargill Licensing Trust previously held the naming rights. Since 2013, they have been held by the Southern Institute of Technology.

Southland is New Zealand's southernmost region. It consists of the southwestern portion of the South Island and includes Stewart Island. Southland is bordered by the culturally similar Otago Region to the north and east, and the West Coast Region in the extreme northwest. The contestants were split into the show's four traditional categories: Boys, Girls, Over 25s and Groups.

Jackie Thomas is a New Zealand singer who won the first New Zealand season of The X Factor in 2013. Competing in the Girls category, she was mentored in the series by Daniel Bedingfield. Her winner's single "It's Worth It" was released on 22 July 2013 and debuted at number one on the New Zealand Music Charts. The song became certified Gold in its first week and eventually reached Platinum by its third week.

Moorhouse was a New Zealand boy band consisting of members Jason Aileone, Brock Ashby, Rory McKenna, Marley Sola Wilcox-Nanai and Rameka Uitime-Paraki. They formed in Christchurch in 2012 and are best known for their appearance in the first New Zealand series of The X Factor where they and were the tenth contestant eliminated. Competing in the Groups category, they were mentored by Melanie Blatt. Their debut single "Mama Said" was released in August 2013, peaking at number eight in the New Zealand charts. In February 2015 the band announced it had split up.

Ria Iris Daphne Bond is a New Zealand politician and former hairdresser. She was appointed to the House of Representatives as a New Zealand First list MP following Winston Peters winning the March 2015 Northland by-election. She now serves as an Invercargill City Councillor after an unsuccessful bid for the 2022 Invercargill mayoral election but a successful attempt to obtain a seat on the city council.

Stephen Reuben Tonkin, known as Stevie Tonks, is a New Zealand singer from Christchurch, who was the tenth contestant eliminated on the second season of The X Factor. In the boys category he was mentored by Natalie Bassingthwaighte, and before that by Natalia Kills.

The 2022 Invercargill mayoral election took place on 8 October 2022 as part of the New Zealand local elections. Incumbent mayor Tim Shadbolt unsuccessfully sought a tenth term against nine other candidates, losing to his deputy Nobby Clark.
