The game lasted 33 innings,with 8 hours and 25 minutes of playing time. The first 32 innings were played overnight from April 18–19,1981,at McCoy Stadium in Pawtucket,Rhode Island,and the tie-breaking 33rd inning was played June 23,1981. Pawtucket won the game,3–2.

He also played for the Boston Red Sox,Los Angeles Dodgers,Cleveland Indians and the New York Yankees. Ojeda was the lone survivor of a March 22,1993,boating accident that killed fellow Cleveland Indians players Steve Olin and Tim Crews. He is a former pre- and post-game studio analyst for Mets' broadcasts.
Richard Garnet Rowland is an American former professional baseball player. He played in Major League Baseball as a backup catcher for the Detroit Tigers and the Boston Red Sox from 1990 to 1995. In addition to catching,he also played sparsely as a designated hitter,first baseman,third baseman,and pinch runner. Prior to playing professional baseball,Rowland attended Mendocino College in nearby Ukiah,California. He also had a longer career in minor league baseball on and off from 1988 to 1997,where he even served as a pitcher in three games.
Ramón David Santiago Sanchez is a Dominican-American former professional baseball player,and minor league coach for the Detroit Tigers. Santiago played in Major League Baseball (MLB) as an infielder for the Detroit Tigers from 2002 to 2003,the Seattle Mariners from 2004 to 2005,again with the Tigers from 2006 to 2013 and with the Cincinnati Reds in 2014. He spent most of his major league career at shortstop,but also played a significant amount of time at second base,and occasionally third base. He is the only MLB player in history to hit a grand slam in his last at bat with a walk-off home run. He accomplished this feat playing with the Cincinnati Reds with two outs in the bottom of the 10th inning on September 27,2014,on a 1–0 pitch from the Pittsburgh Pirates' Bobby LaFromboise.
Jason Michael Grilli is an American former professional baseball pitcher. He played in Major League Baseball (MLB) for the Florida Marlins,Chicago White Sox,Detroit Tigers,Colorado Rockies,Pittsburgh Pirates,Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim,Atlanta Braves,Toronto Blue Jays,and Texas Rangers. Taken as the fourth overall selection of the 1997 MLB draft by the San Francisco Giants,Grilli was one of the top starting pitcher prospects in all of Minor League Baseball,ranked 54th in 1998 and 44th in 1999. The Giants traded him to the Florida Marlins in 1999,for whom he debuted on May 11,2000.
Patrick John Underwood is a retired Major League Baseball pitcher who played from 1979 to 1983. Underwood was drafted by the Detroit Tigers in the first round of the 1976 Major League Baseball Draft,as the second pick overall. His older brother,Tom was also a pitcher. Pat made his major league debut against Tom. It is the first time in major league history this has occurred.

He returned to the Red Sox as their manager in 2013,winning the World Series with them in his first year,and led the team until 2017. Since 2018,he has held a scouting position with the Cincinnati Reds.
