Steve Patterson (born 1958 in Beaver Dam, Wisconsin) is a former American sports executive. He most recently served as the president and CEO of the Arizona Coyotes of the National Hockey League (NHL). Patterson is the former athletic director of the University of Texas, and the former president and general manager of the Portland Trail Blazers of the National Basketball Association (NBA).

Patterson attended the University of Texas, graduating with honors with a bachelor's degree in business administration in 1980. He graduated from UT's law school in 1984. In 1989, he replaced his father Ray as general manager of the Houston Rockets. [1]

Patterson joined the Portland Trail Blazers as team's president in June 2003. He became the general manager after John Nash's contract was not renewed in May 2006, and served in both roles until resigning on March 1, 2007. [2]

Patterson had previously worked as senior vice president and chief development officer of the Houston Texans of the National Football League (NFL), also as governor, president and general manager of the Houston Aeros of the International Hockey League (IHL), and as general manager and alternate governor of the Houston Rockets of the NBA. Patterson was named Arizona State University's vice president for university athletics and athletics director on March 28, 2012. Prior to that, he was the chief operating officer for Arizona State University's athletics and managing director of their athletic teams.

On November 5, 2013, Patterson returned to his alma mater as the University of Texas's athletic director, replacing the retiring DeLoss Dodds. [4] He was relieved from his duties as an athletic director on September 15, 2015.

On July 12, 2017, Patterson was appointed president and CEO of the Arizona Coyotes of the National Hockey League (NHL). [5]

Personal life

Patterson is son of Ray Patterson, who was the president of the Milwaukee Bucks from 1968-1972 and the general manager of the Houston Rockets of the NBA from 1972 to 1990.

Clyde Austin Drexler is an American former professional basketball player who currently works as the commissioner of the Big3 3-on-3 basketball league. Nicknamed "Clyde the Glide", he played 15 seasons in the National Basketball Association (NBA), spending a majority of his career with the Portland Trail Blazers before finishing with the Houston Rockets. He was a ten-time NBA All-Star and named to the NBA's 50th and 75th anniversary teams. Drexler won an NBA championship with Houston in 1995, and earned a gold medal on the 1992 United States Olympic team known as "The Dream Team". He was inducted twice into the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame, in 2004 for his individual career and in 2010 as a member of the "Dream Team". Raymond Albert Patterson, Jr. was general manager of the NBA's Houston Rockets from 1972 to 1990. He was named NBA Executive of the Year in 1977, and his Rockets appeared in the NBA Finals in 1981 and 1986. Among his most notable player acquisitions were Ralph Sampson in 1983 and Hakeem Olajuwon in 1984. He left the Rockets in 1990 with hopes of becoming co-owner of an NHL team in Houston, and was succeeded by his son, Steve. Ray Patterson's NHL dreams never materialized, but he helped found an International Hockey League franchise, the Houston Aeros, in 1994.

Patrick Zipfel is an American basketball coach and former college athletics director. He is currently an assistant coach and advance scout for the Phoenix Suns of the National Basketball Association (NBA). The Philadelphia native was a part of the Suns' Western Conference Championship title and NBA Finals run in 2021. Zipfel worked as assistant coach/advance scout for the Chicago Bulls(NBA)as well as the Minnesota Timberwolves. In October 2015, Zipfel accepted an interim coaching position at Mansfield University, located in Mansfield, Pennsylvania to help restore the program.
