Joe Cronin (February 11, 1976) is an American basketball executive who is currently general manager for the Portland Trail Blazers of the National Basketball Association (NBA).

Early life

Cronin attended Horizon High School in Thornton, Colorado, where he was an accomplished basketball player. He attended the United States Air Force Academy Preparatory School after high school and briefly considered joining the Air Force. He then attended Regis University, where he played basketball, before transferring to the University of Northern Colorado. [1]

Early career

Before his job as general manager, Cronin held various roles within the Blazers organization, starting as the team's basketball operations intern in 2006, transitioning to pro scout/salary cap analyst in 2010, and eventually assuming the position of director of player personnel in 2014. [2] [3] Cronin was then elevated to the position of assistant general manager in 2021. [1] [4]

Executive career

In December 2021, Cronin was made interim general manager of the Trail Blazers, following Neil Olshey's dismissal. [1] On May 9, 2022, Cronin was officially hired as the organization's 11th general manager and signed a four-year contract. [5] [6]

Cronin was responsible for trade negotiations involving Damian Lillard. [7] [8] [9] [10] [11] [12] Since his hiring, Cronin has traded CJ McCollum, Norman Powell, Josh Hart, Larry Nance, Jr., and Robert Covington. [13] With Cronin at the helm, the organization has drafted Shaedon Sharpe with the 7th pick in 2022 and Scoot Henderson with the 3rd pick in 2023. [14]

Personal life

Cronin obtained his master's degree from the University of Denver, concurrently serving as a graduate assistant for the men's basketball team. Cronin lives in Portland with his wife, Megan. His sister is former WNBA player Katie Cronin. [15]

He was a ten-time NBA All-Star and named to the NBA's 50th and 75th anniversary teams. Drexler won an NBA championship with Houston in 1995, and earned a gold medal on the 1992 United States Olympic team known as "The Dream Team". He was inducted twice into the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame, in 2004 for his individual career and in 2010 as a member of the "Dream Team". Kevin Lee Pritchard is an American basketball executive, and a former player and coach, who is currently the president of basketball operations for the Indiana Pacers. Pritchard played 4 seasons in the NBA as a player, and was also the general manager of the Portland Trail Blazers, and the Indiana Pacers.

Ronald T. Murphy is a retired American basketball player. Born in Dover, Delaware, Murphy played one season in the National Basketball Association (NBA) for the Portland Trail Blazers. He was drafted by Portland in the first round of the 1987 NBA draft out of Jacksonville University, where he played for four years. Listed at 6 feet 5 inches (1.96 m) and 235 pounds (107 kg)[a], Murphy played one season in the NBA (1987–88) as a guard-forward appearing in a total of 18 games with an average of 2.0 points 0.6 rebounds per game. His rookie season ended after he fractured his fifth metatarsal bone during a practice in March 1988.

The 1999–2000 Portland Trail Blazers season was the 30th season for the Portland Trail Blazers in the National Basketball Association. During the off-season, the Blazers acquired All-Star forward and 6-time champion Scottie Pippen from the Houston Rockets, acquired Steve Smith from the Atlanta Hawks, and signed free agent Detlef Schrempf. Damian Lamonte Ollie Lillard Sr. is an American professional basketball player for the Milwaukee Bucks of the National Basketball Association (NBA). He was selected by the Portland Trail Blazers with the sixth overall pick in the 2012 NBA draft, and was named the NBA Rookie of the Year for the 2012–13 season. The team made their first draft pick in the 1970 NBA draft and have selected 283 players total. The franchise won its only NBA championship in 1977, when the team was led by their 1974 first overall pick, Bill Walton, as well as multiple other former draft picks who went on to have their numbers retired by Portland. The 2023–24 Portland Trail Blazers season was the 54th season of the franchise in the National Basketball Association (NBA). This became the first season in franchise history where Portland would have an NBA G League team of their own to be affiliated with by the Rip City Remix, thus leaving every NBA team outside of the Phoenix Suns with an official affiliate or partnership involved with a G League development team. This is also the first season since 2011–12 without Damian Lillard on the roster, as he was traded to the Milwaukee Bucks in exchange for Jrue Holiday, Deandre Ayton, Toumani Camara, and a 2029 first-round draft pick. Four days later, Holiday was traded to the Boston Celtics in exchange for Robert Williams III, Malcolm Brogdon, and two future first-round draft picks.
