Steven Lehrer is a physician and writer, known for medical research and for his English translation of Else Ury.

Early years and education

Lehrer was born in Los Angeles. He attended UCLA and graduated from Johns Hopkins University and Johns Hopkins School of Medicine.

Career

After training and specialty board certification, Lehrer worked as a radiologist, radiation oncologist, and nuclear medicine physician.

Medical research

Lehrer has published on the topics of breast cancer and the estrogen receptor, prostate cancer, puberty and pregnancy. [1] He published two medical textbooks, Understanding Lung Sounds and Understanding Pediatric Heart Sounds . [2] [3] [4] [5] [6] [7] [8] [9] [10]

Writer

Lehrer published the first English translation of the most popular book of German children's writer Else Ury, Nesthäkchen and the World War. [11] [12] [13] He has published plays, a novel, [14] books on German history, [15] the Holocaust, [16] and the history of medicine. [17] [18] [19] [20] [21] He edited a collection of the stories of Frank Buck [22] and published English translations of Tanks Break Through! by Alfred-Ingemar Berndt and From Lemberg to Bordeaux by Leo Leixner. Lehrer was interviewed on the History Channel series Mavericks, Miracles, and Medicine about his book Explorers of the Body, [23] as well as by the BBC for their series, Medical Mavericks, Beating Infection (episode 4). Pulmonaryinsufficiency is a condition in which the pulmonary valve is incompetent and allows backflow from the pulmonary artery to the right ventricle of the heart during diastole. Else Ury was a German-Jewish novelist and children's book author. Her best-known character is the blonde doctor's daughter Annemarie Braun, whose life from childhood to old age is told in the ten volumes of the highly successful Nesthäkchen series. The books, the six-part TV series Nesthäkchen (1983), based on the first three volumes, as well as the new DVD edition (2005) caught the attention of millions of readers and viewers. During Ury's lifetime Nesthäkchen und der Weltkrieg, the fourth volume, was the most popular. Else Ury was a member of the German Bürgertum. She was pulled between patriotic German citizenship and Jewish cultural heritage. This situation is reflected in her writings, although the Nesthäkchen books make no references to Judaism. In 1943, Else Ury was deported to Auschwitz concentration camp, where she was murdered upon her arrival.
