Streatham Ice and Leisure Centre is an ice rink and leisure centre in Streatham, London. It is the only Olympic-sized skating rink in the city, [1] and is the home ice of the Streatham IHC and Streatham Storm ice hockey teams. [2] It replaced the older Streatham Ice Arena.
Streatham Ice Arena was originally opened on the site on the 26 February 1931 by the Mayor of Wandsworth, Lt Col. A. Bellamy, and the Member of Parliament for Streatham, Sir William Lane-Mitchell. [3]
During the Second World War, the arena was closed to the public and was used as a food storage centre.
In 1962 the arena was purchased by the Mecca entertainments company, who spent almost £350,000 on various improvements including a restaurant and cocktail bar, and renamed the rink as Silver Blades, it being one of several in a chain of Silver Blades ice rinks that the company operated in the UK. [4] A further £1 million was spent refurbishing the rink in 1980, following problems with the aging ice-making machinery.
However, by the end of the twentieth century the building was proving very expensive to maintain and it had begun to fall into disrepair. During its last years, the arena was in substandard condition from a safety point of view, and would have required extensive refurbishment, including to the curved ceiling, to remain operative. [5] In 2001 Tesco bought the site in preparation for a proposed multi-million pound Streatham Hub development, which was to include not only a new Olympic sized ice rink but also a public leisure centre with a 50 metre long swimming pool, 250 homes and a large Tesco store.
The arena finally closed on 18 December 2011, was demolished, and later replaced by the mixed-use development complex which opened to the public on 18 November 2013. To cover the time until the new ice rink opened, a smaller, temporary ice rink was built two miles away in Brixton. [6] [7]

The Streatham Ice Hockey Club is a British ice hockey club based in Streatham, London, England. Amongst the oldest British ice hockey teams still in existence, they were founded in 1932 as Streatham, and added the name Redskins in 1974. During the 1980s, the club were one of the leading teams in the British Hockey League, their biggest rivals being the Nottingham Panthers. By the end of the 1980s, however, the club's fortunes were in decline and they were relegated from the Premier Division in 1989.
Romford Ice Arena was an ice rink located in Romford in the London Borough of Havering, England. The venue was built in the 1980s and at the time of opening in 1987 was equipped with a full range of facilities, including a cafe and arcade games. The venue closed in April 2013. It has now been replaced by the Sapphire Ice and Leisure Centre, which opened in 2018 on a nearby site and was named in honour of Queen Elizabeth II's Sapphire Jubilee.
Wales National Ice Rink (WNIR) was an ice rink in Cardiff, Wales. It had a capacity of 2,700 for ice hockey and was the former home of the Cardiff Devils ice hockey team. It was opened in September 1986, and was inaugurated by Sarah, Duchess of York on 27 April 1987.

The Centrum Arena was a 2,733 seat ice arena in Prestwick, South Ayrshire, Scotland that opened on 25 August 1996. The arena was used during the winter months for recreational ice skating and ice hockey matches. In the summer months, the arena was used for various events such as the Chinese State Circus. The Centrum was famous as being the home of the Ayr Scottish Eagles ice hockey club from 1996 until 2002. The building was located at 125 Ayr Road on public land and was demolished in 2009. Today the site is occupied by a supermarket.
Planet Ice, formerly known as Altrincham Ice Dome is an ice rink in Altrincham, Greater Manchester, England. It has 2,140 seats according to the rink website, and up to 300 standing places. It is currently operated by Planet Ice.

Richmond Ice Rink was an ice skating rink at Clevedon Road, Twickenham, formerly in Middlesex and now in the London Borough of Richmond upon Thames. When it opened, in 1928, it had the longest ice surface in any indoor rink in the world and it soon became the premier rink in London. The rink closed in 1992 and the building was demolished.
