The Students For Society (SFS) was founded in Panjab University, Chandigarh on 28 September 2010 as a students' discussion group for holding discussions on books and social issues, [5] on the 103rd birth anniversary of Bhagat Singh. It rejected the politics of muscle and money power by mainstream political parties in University. [6] [7] It also rejected the politics of those who were trying to get votes by offering movie shows, dinners, trips and beauty parlour coupons. [8] SFS takes out its rallies on foot with singing of slogans with a Tambourine (Dafli [9] [10] ) [11] [12] while other parties took out rallies in cars. [13] Its rallies are joined by a considerable number of campus students while the SOI, PUSU and NSUI alliances had to call outsiders in violation of the Lyngdoh panel norms. [14] [15]

About SFS

Largely leftist in its ideology, SFS was founded in 2010 by Sachinderpal Pali, Amrik Singh, Amandeep Singh, Amaninder Singh, Pardeep Singh and Sawinder Singh. Among the founders, Pali is the only one now who is actively involved in the organisation, which fought its first Panjab University Campus Students Council (PUCSC) election in 2014. The slogan of the organisation, according to spokesperson Harmandeep Singh, is "to mobilise youth to accomplish the new democratic revolution in India." [16] Students For Society (SFS) is a student organization that envisions to work on the footsteps of Bhagat Singh. SFS strive to work together with all the democratic forces to create egalitarian society, where equality and freedom are not mere words to be written on pages of constitution but a material reality. SFS has always endeavored toward promoting academic culture and encouraging critical thinking be it through discussions, seminars or other cultural events. When the time demands so, SFS has raised its voice against each and every injustice done or regressive step taken by central or state government or university administration like issues of fee hikes, commercialization of education, funds cutting or deteriorating conditions of hostel and mess workers. Understanding student as part of society, and following the principle of students for society it has initiated a number of protest demonstration against women oppression, caste based oppression and other evils of society.

Street plays

Street Plays are the unique identity of SFS' politics in campus. Every year they expose the cheap politics of other student outfits through its street plays. It is commonly seen that other student organisations spent several lakhs of money on campaigning, banners, stickers, discothèque parties, car rallies, trips to hill stations, free meals, flash mobs, online campaigns but SFS members organised street plays mocking these other outfits. One such play by SFS in 2016 was Melan vottan da which was a satirical take on the student elections. [17] [18] [19] [20] [21] Again in 2018 like 2017 and 2016 SFS used its traditional street play "Mela Votan Da" as campaign tool. This time it was under the banner of "Melan Votan Da Returns". It is a play in the form of satire on all mainstream political parties' student wings. Shamefully in 2018 also university authorities didn't allow SFS to stage play on all the decided cites as they fear that SFS gains good ground in elections on the basis of their play. [22] Harman Deep, SFS leader, said: "Like other parties, we do not have resources to take students out for movies or discotheques. The mode of street plays not only entertains, but communicates what we perceive has been happening in the polls. It has been an effective strategy." [23]

PUCSC elections

It was in 2014, when for the first time SFS fielded its candidate for the Presidential Post in Panjab University Campus Students Council PUCSC and got unexceptionally good number of votes. In 2015 SFS did not fought elections as it was alleged by some organisations that the ongoing Girls protest which was ked by SFS in 2015 is only to gain political mileage. So SFS through GBM (General Body Meeting) decided to boycott elections. In 2016 Panjab University Campus Students Council elections, SFS gave an impressive performance with its presidential candidate Amritpal Singh coming on third position with 2494 votes. [24] It was however a close contest between PUSU and Students For Society (SFS) for the president's post. SOI was continuously on the third position but after the counting of votes of University Institute of Information and Technology (UIET) department that SOI presidential candidate secured the second position. [25] In 2017 SFS panel had one girl in the field, named Hasanpreet Kaur for the presidential election. Hasanpreet is from the Physics Department. Shiv Saurav for Vice President, UIET, Ranjit Singh for General Secretary, Punjabi Department, And for the post of Joint Secretary, Karan Goyal, UILS landed in the field. [26] In 2018 PUCSC elections, SFS's Kanupriya, a second year student of M.Sc. Zoology [27] from Patti, Punjab [28] was elected first women president in the history of Panjab University. [29] [30] 22 years old [31] Kanupriya, demanded freedom for girls keeping girls' hostels open for 24 hours [32] [33] [34] and attacked ideology of RSS. [35] SFS won more than 50 percent votes in 11 departments. [36] [37] In 2019 PUCSC elections SFS following its last year election setup again fielded only one candidate for the post of President. In year 2019, Scholar from Chemistry department, Priya fought election for President from the platform of SFS. She secured third position trailing behind SOI candidate Chetan Choudhary by approx. 500 votes and ABVP candidate Paras Rattan by 50 votes.

Activities

SFS endeavours toward promoting democratic academic culture inside the campus. It aims to fight on all students' issues uncompromisingly. Since 2012, [40] SFS organized fee hike protests and raised voice against sexual harassment on the campus, unhygienic diet in the hostels and for banning of four-wheelers inside campus making the PU a vehicle-free zone and organised a number of seminars and discussions inside the campus premises. [8] In February 2017, the SFS also organised protest at campus on an incident of rape of 16 Scheduled Tribe (Adivasi) women in Chhattisgarh which was retailited by ABVP members of University. [41] In 2017 Fee hike protests 40 SFS-affiliated students were arrested to which it said there is a 'deliberate attempt' being made to restrict the voice of students in universities. [42] [43]

11 April 2017 episode

After Panjab University announced up to 1100% fee hike in different courses, SFS immediately gave the call to protest against such a massive fee hike and a 40 days long struggle was led by SFS and with the unity of students they won the struggle. It was on 11 April 2017, [45] when call was given to gather in front of VC office and boycott classes. Huge gathering of students was present there by 11 in the morning. After some heated arguments with police and authorities, there was aggressive attack on students by police men. Water cannon and Lathis were used to disperse the gathering. Finally students retaliated. [46] There was continuous stone pelting done by the students toward police men. Then the more aggressive police used tear gas and other modes against the students. 67 students were arrested and charged with sedition for protesting against MHRD and PU, which was dropped later on. That day was on the most glorious day of students' struggle. Finally on 7 May that year fee hike was rolled back. [47]

Seema Azad episode

In March 2017, SFS was objected by PU authorities and RSS student wing, Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad (ABVP), when it brought activist Seema Azad to the campus. [48] It was a planned event, Second Conference of SFS in the university the permission for which was rejected by university authorities on the behest of MP from Chandigarh and some student organisations. SFS objected to that and took out their conference outside VC office. Where, Azad was dressed as a Sikh woman, addressed the students on the topic 'Rise of fascism'. [49] The ABVP had maintained that it would oppose her with swords and sticks. [50] [51]

Controversies

SFS has been the point of discussion among university students and outer folks on various grounds. Be it their straight forward approach against the establishment or their vocal arguments against the major failures of the government. But along with this, they are not able to safeguard themselves from various controversies. From sharing the stage with the Pro-Khalistani organizations or hurting the religious sentiments of the people but they have always defended them out of such controversies by their fierce way of arguments.

Students Federation of India Student organisation of India

The Students' Federation of India (SFI) is an Indian left-wing student organisation politically aligned to the Communist Party of India (Marxist). It claims to be India's largest student organisation with more than 4 million members.

Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad Indian student organisation

Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad (ABVP) is a right-wing all India student organisation affiliated to the Hindu nationalist Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS). They claim themselves to be India's largest student organisation with more than three million members.

Satya Pal Jain

Satya Pal Jain is the Additional Solicitor General of India. He is a Member of Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) National Executive Committee. He was elected Member of Parliament from Chandigarh in 1996 and 1998. He is a practising Senior Advocate in the Supreme Court of India and the Punjab and Haryana High Court at Chandigarh.

All India Students Association Indian students organization

All India Students' Association (AISA) is a left wing student organisation in India. It describes itself as "the voice of the radical students' movement" and is affiliated to the Communist Party of India (Marxist–Leninist) Liberation. The association was previously affiliated to the Indian People's Front. The association was founded in Allahabad on 9 August 1990 with the merger of several left wing students organisations across India. It has organisational presence in the states and union territories of Delhi, Chandigarh, Uttarakhand, Uttar Pradesh, Assam, Uttarakhand, Bihar, Jharkhand and West Bengal. N. Sai Balaji is the national president of AISA and Sandeep Saurav is its National General Secretary.

National Students Union of India Indian students organization

The National Students' Union of India (NSUI), the student wing of the Indian National Congress, was established on 9 April 1971. The organisation was founded by Indira Gandhi after merging the Kerala Students Union and the West Bengal State Chhatra Parishad to form a national students' organisation.

Student Organisation of India (SOI) is the student division of the Shiromani Akali Dal (SAD) party in India. The organisation is a part of the Panjab University, Chandigarh. In 2015, SOI Alliance won all 4 seats in Panjab University Campus Students Council. SOI made stunning debut in Delhi University student elections in 2015. SOI contested out of 18 seats in three colleges under DU and was able win 10. SOI candidates have won all the six seats of student union at Sri Guru Gobind Singh College of Commerce, Pitam Pura with Mandeep Singh GGS as president, Agamjeet Singh Malhotra as vice-president, Deepakshi Garg as joint secretary, Tavleen kaur as general secretary while Pavneet Kaur and Amanpal Singh both as central councillors. Manjot Singh was elected as President and Ishmeet singh vicky of SOI was also elected Vice president in Sri Guru Nanak Dev Khalsa College, Karol Bagh. Also at Sri Guru Teg Bahadur Khalsa College on North Campus, SOI's Naresh Rohilla was elected president while Rajni Arora and Himanshu Sharma as joint secretaries. Whereas The SOI Delhi State President Is Gagan Singh Chiyasi ,Secretary General Is Gurdev Rayat ..Also Harkirat Singh Brar From IETVE is the Senior President at Panjab University.

Dalvir Singh Khangura is MLA from Dhuri, Sangrur District, Punjab. He got elected for the seat in the 2017 Punjab Legislative Assembly election. He is a Young Leader of Indian National Congress. Dalvir Singh Khangura, known as "Goldy", was born on 24 September 1982 in a Jatt Sikh family in Dhuri, District Sangrur, Punjab India. He has done his schooling from S.V.M, Dhuri. He later joined S.D. College, Chandigarh and did his Graduation and PGDCA.

Panjab University Campus Students Council

Panjab University Campus Students Council or PUCSC is Students' union consisting of the departmental representatives and other office bearers like President, Vice-President, Secretary and Joint-Secretary along with 123 Departmental Representatives (DRs) directly elected by the students from the various teaching departments on the Panjab University, Chandigarh campus. Further, these elected office-bearers and department representatives elect the remaining five members of the executive of the Council. The Dean Student Welfare is ex officio Chairman of the Council. Elections are held every year in August–September months. There is ban on property defacement for clean elections.

The Banaras Hindu University Students' Union generally abbreviated as "BHU Students' Union or BHUSU", is Students' union of Banaras Hindu University. The Students' Union is responsible for representing students, both within the University and externally for all academic, non-academic and student welfare purposes.

Delhi University Students Union, generally abbreviated as DUSU, is a students' union at the University of Delhi. It is primarily responsible for building and preserving a healthy political culture and an atmosphere of open debates on the campus. Students are kept informed about the public meetings, discussions and other issues through pamphlets and notices. The Students' Union has four central panel positions. These are the posts of President, Vice President, Secretary and Joint-Secretary.

Suicide of Rohith Vemula Suicide of an Indian student in 2016

Rohith Chakravarti Vemula was an Indian PhD scholar at the University of Hyderabad. From July 2015, the university stopped paying Rohith his monthly stipend of ₹25,000, with friends alleging that he was targeted for raising issues on campus under the banner of Ambedkar Students' Association (ASA), an Ambedkarite student organization.

On 9 February 2016, some students of Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU) held a protest on their campus against the capital punishment meted out to the 2001 Indian Parliament attack convict Afzal Guru, and Kashmiri separatist Maqbool Bhat. The organizers of the event were former members of the Democratic Students' Union (DSU). The event was held despite the University administration withdrawing permission for the event shortly before it was due to begin, due to protests by members of the student union of ABVP. The event saw clashes between various student groups. A video was circulated by Indian news channel Zee news in which a small group of individuals, whom a later investigation described as outsiders to the University wearing masks, shouted "anti-India" slogans. The slogans were criticized by many individuals, including political leaders and students of JNU.

University Institute of Applied Management Sciences

University Institute of Applied Management Sciences, established in 2008 under the aegis of the Panjab University, offers management education to professional managers as specialized full-time MBA programmes. It is one of the prestigious and reputed business schools in India which started offering sectoral MBA programmes supplemented with specialization in core functional areas of management. Launched by the Faculty of Business Management & Commerce of Panjab University in 2008, it has since significantly expanded its number of management courses.

Ambedkar Students' Association (ASA) is a student organization in India representing students from Scheduled Castes and Scheduled Tribes (SC/ST), Other Backward Class (OBC), religious minorities and other oppressed communities. ASA works for the assertion of students from dalit and other marginalised communities.

2020 Jawaharlal Nehru University attack Attack on a university campus in India

On 5 January 2020, more than 50 masked people armed with rods, sticks and acid attacked the campus of Jawaharlal Nehru University, Delhi, and injured more than 39 students and teachers. Many students received serious injuries. Professors who tried to intervene and protect the students, as well as ambulances carrying injured individuals, were attacked. Eyewitnesses stated that police within the campus did not intervene to stop the mob. After attacking residents of the university campus for three hours, the mob escaped; none of its members was arrested or detained. All 36 students who were injured and admitted to the All India Institute of Medical Sciences, New Delhi (AIIMS) were discharged within 24 hours.

Aishe Ghosh is an Indian Politician. She was the president of the Jawaharlal Nehru University Students' Union and is a member of the Students' Federation of India. She was also the CPI(M) candidate from Jamuria constituency for 2021 West Bengal Legislative Assembly election.
