Submotion Orchestra are a seven piece band formed in 2009 in Leeds, Yorkshire, England. They are influenced by dubstep, soul, ambient electronica, jazz and dub.
Their debut LP Finest Hour was released in 2011 on Exceptional Records. They have toured and performed all over the UK, Europe and worldwide, including festival shows at The Big Chill, Latitude, Glastonbury, Outlook, Bestival, and in Thailand at Wonderfruit. [1] They have released five full-length albums and five EPs.
The original members of the band - Ruby Wood (vocals), Simon Beddoe (trumpet), Taz Modi (keyboards), Chris 'Fatty' Hargreaves (bass), Tommy Evans (drums), Danny Templeman (percussion) and Dom 'Ruckspin' Howard (effects, production) - came together after an Arts Council-funded event to mix electronic and classical music at York Minster in 2009. [2] Their first EP was released in 2010 on Ranking Records, and led to a live session for BBC Radio One with Gilles Peterson. [3] Their first album, Finest Hour, was released in 2011 on Exceptional Records to positive reviews, with BBC Music saying 'this intriguing debut suggests the group as one to keep an eye on'. [4]
Second album Fragments followed in 2012 to more critical acclaim, with Sputnikmusic saying 'the change in overall tone and some slight tweaks to their formula easily make this one of the year’s must listen releases'. [5] After releasing the 1968 EP on Circus Records in 2013, the band signed to Ninja Tune through their Counter Records imprint, and released Alium in 2014, the III EP in 2015 and Counter Theory in 2016. [6]
After forming their own label, SMO Recordings, in 2018, the band released Kites, with The Skinny saying it 'marks a fine return to Submotion Orchestra's cinematic jazz roots'. [7] Two Unplugged collections followed, with the band revisiting older tracks in an acoustic format, before touring with the Prism String Ensemble in 2023 to perform this material. [8] In 2024, the band announced the upcoming release of the 'Five Points' EP. [9]
Their track 'All Yours' was sampled by Bryson Tiller on his track 'Right My Wrongs' in 2015.
Lift Your Skinny Fists like Antennas to Heaven is the second studio album by Canadian post-rock band Godspeed You! Black Emperor, released as a double album October 9, 2000 on vinyl by Constellation, and November 8, 2000 on CD by Kranky. It was listed on multiple decade-end lists as one of the greatest albums of the 2000s.
Strung Out is an American punk rock band from Simi Valley, California, formed in 1989. Their sound fuses punk with elements of heavy metal. They have released nine studio albums on Fat Wreck Chords as well as one live album, two B-sides collections, a best-of, a box set, and appeared on numerous compilations and skate/surf/dirt bike/offroading videos. They have played on the Warped Tour and continue to tour internationally. The band currently has an ongoing collaboration beer with Lucky Luke Brewing Company called “Astrolux Golden Ale”. Their albums have charted on the Billboard 200.
Remission is a 1984 EP by Canadian electro-industrial band Skinny Puppy, their record label debut and first release with Nettwerk. The 12-inch EP originally featured six tracks, then, a year later in 1985, it was released on cassette with five additional songs that lengthened the release to a full album. This expansion became the default version of Remission.
Kayo Dot is an American avant-garde metal band. Formed in 2003 by Toby Driver after the break-up of Maudlin of the Well, they released their debut album Choirs of the Eye on John Zorn's Tzadik Records that same year. Since then, Kayo Dot's lineup has drastically changed over the years. Toby Driver is the only founding member of the band still remaining, save for frequent lyrical contributions from former motW member Jason Byron. Up until 2011, the lineup was constantly shifting, and Kayo Dot's sound consistently changed over the years, featuring a wide variety of instrumentation including guitar, drums, bass, violin, saxophone, vibraphone, synthesizers, clarinets and flutes. Underground metal audiences warmly received the group upon its early existence, with the 2003 album Choirs of the Eye and the 2006 album Dowsing Anemone with Copper Tongue both becoming underground hits in the progressive metal scene.
The Canadian electro-industrial band Skinny Puppy has released twelve studio albums and two extended plays along with a number of live albums, compilations, and singles. The group formed in 1982 and released its debut EP, Back & Forth, in 1984. Later that year, Skinny Puppy was picked up by Nettwerk and released another EP, Remission, in December 1984. The band's first studio album, 1985's Bites, was its last with the original lineup of vocalist Nivek Ogre and producer / multi-instrumentalist cEvin Key; Dwayne Goettel joined in 1986, and the band released its next two albums, Mind: The Perpetual Intercourse and Cleanse Fold and Manipulate, in 1986 and 1987 respectively.

In 2014, they worked together on the soundtrack to the film The Possibilities Are Endless which won the Mojo 'Film of the Year' Award.

Public Strain is the second and final studio album by Canadian rock band Women. It was released on August 23, 2010, via Flemish Eye in Canada and Jagjaguwar in the United States. The album was produced by Chad VanGaalen and recorded during a period of isolation for the band with limited equipment and experimental techniques involved in the 10-month recording process. It has been noted for the key and vocal delivery, unique sound and krautrock style, influence from the Velvet Underground, and numerous genres including post-punk.

Skinny Lister are a British folk band formed in London in 2009. They were a five-piece band until October 2013 when a drummer was added. In August 2022 they returned to being a five piece after Sam Brace left and the decision was made not to replace him. They are signed to Xtra Mile Recordings, and were previously signed to Sunday Best Records in the UK, SideOneDummy Records in the US, and Uncle Owen Records in Japan.
MTV Unplugged is an extended play (EP) and live album by American rock band Thirty Seconds to Mars, released in the United States on August 19, 2011 by Virgin Records. It features an acoustic performance taped at Sony Music Studios in New York City on May 13 of that year for the television series MTV Unplugged. The show's purpose is to present name artists, and feature them stripped of studio equipment. The performance was accompanied by musicians from the Vitamin String Quartet, a gospel choir and included the contribution of the band's fans.
Benjamin Shaw is an English-Canadian musician and artist based in Melbourne, Australia. He has recorded for a number of different labels but is a mainstay of Audio Antihero records. He also uses the monickers of Guppy and Megadead.
Nosferatu D2 were an English indie rock band from Croydon, Surrey, England. They were active from 2005 to 2007 and remained unsigned during that time. The band experienced posthumous acclaim and interest when the debuting Audio Antihero record label issued their unreleased debut album We're Gonna Walk Around This City With Our Headphones On To Block Out The Noise.
Hector Bizerk were an experimental hip-hop group from Glasgow, Scotland, featuring drummer Audrey Tait and rapper Louie. Formed in 2011, they were initially a duo. However later recordings saw them add Jennifer Muir and Fraser Sneddon (Bass). They have released five EPs and three albums, and their 2014 EP The Bird That Never Flew features guest vocals from Scotland's Makar Liz Lochhead.
The Paper Kites are an Australian indie rock/folk rock band from Melbourne. The band was formed in 2009 by lead vocalist/guitarist Sam Bentley and keyboardist/guitarist Christina Lacy. Their 2010 single "Bloom" has been certified Platinum in the United States. As of 2024, they have released six studio albums and two EPs. Their latest, At the Roadhouse, came out on 1 September 2023.
The Last Battle were a Scottish alternative indie folk band, who formed in Edinburgh in 2009 around the songs of singer/songwriter Scott Longmuir. Their name derives from a C.S Lewis novel. They released two albums, Heart of the Land, Soul of the Sea (2010) and Lay Your Burden Down (2014).
Catching Flies is an English musician, DJ and record producer from London, England. His sound has been described as sitting on the "smooth, mellow side of electronic music" somewhere "between Flying Lotus and Bonobo" and "contains shades of everything from hip hop to house, from soul to jazz." He has self-released three EPs and numerous remixes for artists like Kwabs and Wilkinson.
