Sugiarti Siswati

Sugiarti (later Sugiarti Siswati)(died May 1987) was an Indonesian writer from Klaten who came of age during the Indonesian Revolution. In 1947 she was a prizewinner in a competition organized by the IPPHOS (see Alex Mendur) for short stories about the war of independence. According to Harian Rakjat, she was a graduate of the Ali Archam Academy (closed 1964). Adding her husband's name to her own, Sugiarti Siswati became an influential member of the PKI-sponsored Lekra, which published her short story collection Sorga Di Bumi (1960), and by 1962 was co-editor of Api Kartini ("Flame of Kartini"), a journal of the Indonesian Women's Movement. She was arrested following 1965's 30 September putsch and survived the ensuing massacres but disappeared from public life. In 1986 she showed several unfinished stories dealing with this period to Hersri Setiawan  [ id ]. [2] Recent interest in her work has centered on her contributions to feminism. [3]

Kartini is a 2017 Indonesian biographical family drama film directed by Hanung Bramantyo and written by Bramantyo and Bagus Bramanti. It features an ensemble cast, with Dian Sastrowardoyo starring in the title role of Indonesian woman emancipation heroine, Kartini. Christine Hakim, Acha Septriasa, Ayushita, Adinia Wirasti, and Reza Rahadian co-stars in supporting roles. Initially to be released on 2016, the film was delayed for a year. The film was released in Indonesia on 19 April 2017, two days before Kartini's day. Although being highly anticipated, the film turned out to perform below expectations. It gained just over 500 thousands viewers, a small viewership for a big budgeted local film. Despite turning a profitable venture, it is still considered an unexpected boxoffice disappointment for failing to reach less than 1 million viewers.

Feminism in Indonesia refers to the long history of discourse for gender equality to bring about positive social change in Indonesia. The issues women in Indonesia currently are facing include gender violence, underage marriages, and lack of representation in the political system. Feminism and the women's right movement began during colonial Indonesia under Dutch rule and were spearheaded by the national heroine Kartini, a Javanese noblewoman who advocated for the education of all women and girls regardless of social status. In the early 19th century, women's rights organizations and movements were allowed to developed under Budi Utomo, the first Indonesian Nationalist organization. Modern day Indonesian feminism include and are influenced by both fundamentalist and progressive Islamic women's organizations.

Nurmala Kartini Sjahrir is an Indonesian anthropologist and former diplomat who served as the Indonesian ambassador to Argentina, accredited to Paraguay and Uruguay from August 10, 2010, to 2014. <i>Letters of a Javanese Princess</i> Dutch-language book of collected letters by Kartini

Letters of a Javanese Princess is a posthumous book of letters by the Dutch East Indies women's rights activist and intellectual Kartini. The letters, which were written in Dutch, reveal Kartini's views on society and modern life, and were collected by one of Kartini's correspondents Jacques Henrij Abendanon and published in 1911. They have since been translated into a number of other languages, including an English language version in 1920 and a Malay language version published by Balai Pustaka in 1922. The book became an important symbol both for liberal Dutch colonial policy and for Indonesian nationalism.
