Sullen was a rock band from St. Louis, Missouri, formed by Justin Slazinik (guitar/vocals) and Shanna Kiel (guitar/vocals).

Slazinik and Kiel met in high school and started playing live shows together in 1999.
In the summer of 1999, Sullen independently released the demo Five Songs for Billy Brown. On November 12, 1999, Sullen opened for the Chicago-based rock duo Local H at The Karma in downtown St. Louis. The two bands formed a working relationship, and shortly thereafter, Local H frontman Scott Lucas invited Kiel to contribute vocals to the song “5th Ave. Crazy” from their album Here comes the zoo.
Sullen then embarked on a national tour with Local H in the spring of 2000. (The lineup consisted of Kiel, Slazinik, with drummer Bryan Weitekemper and bassist Scott Freeman). Following the tour, Weitekemper left the band, and Freeman took over as Sullen’s drummer.
Sullen recorded a second demo consisting of 10 songs. This caught the attention of Wes Kidd, frontman of Chicago’s Triple Fast Action. Working with Silent Partner Management, Kidd became Sullen’s manager.
In May 2003, Sullen released their debut album Paint the Moon on Thick Records. The album featured Tommy Schmitz on drums/bass and Adam Gillespie on bass. [1]
Kiel announced Sullen’s breakup several days prior to a show at St. Louis’ Creepy Crawl on February 27, 2004. [2]
In 2006, Kiel posted on stlpunk.com that Sullen had gotten back together. [3] However, the reunion did not last.
On April 1, 2017, Sullen (Slazinik, Kiel, and Freeman) played a reunion show at Delmar Hall.

On November 7, 2006, Kiel released her full-length, solo debut, Orphan, on Thick Records. Kiel and a friend, Stephanie Sandman, performed as Sibylline for a period of time. In 2005, the pair moved to Los Angeles and later regrouped as Black Fur. Black Fur embarked on a short tour of California with The Hold Steady.
Slazinik fronted Short and Sweet with guitarist Zach LaRose, drummer Ryan Harding, and bassist Phil Blythe. Short and Sweet toured with Local H in 2005.
In 2008, Slazinik and Harding moved to Chicago and founded Left Brain Heart. Slazinik and Harding recorded what would be released as the band’s first album, Sweetie Pie the Tornado (2005) prior to founding the band. Their second record, Hunter/Gatherer, was recorded in 2009 at Million Yen Studios (where Sullen recorded Paint the Moon). In summer 2010, Left Brain Heart joined Local H for a three-week west coast tour. Left Brain Heart disbanded in 2010.
In 2021, Justin Slazinik, with Zack LaRose (Short and Sweet) and former Sullen bandmates Adam Gillespie and Bryan Weitekemper, formed the band Slazinik. Their first album was recorded in spring 2022 at Encapsulated Studios, and will be released in April 2023.
Johnny Loftus, writing for Allmusic, gave Paint the Moon 2.5 out of 5 stars, writing that "While Sullen has rage to spare and has mastered the quiet/loud, female/male dynamic, the band's influences bleed through the fabric on most tracks [on the album]." [4] Writing for Exclaim! , Shawn Merrill called Sullen "the demon child of Sonic Youth" and described Paint the Moon as "Not a quintessential release, but an engaging one." [5] A reviewer named Megan, writing for Punknews.org, gave the album 5 out of 5 stars. In her review, Megan said that Sullen "absolutely blows any competition out of the water" on the album and praised it for being "rough around the edges". [6]
Local H is an American rock band originally formed by guitarist and vocalist Scott Lucas, bassist Matt Garcia, drummer Joe Daniels, and lead guitarist John Sparkman in Zion, Illinois in 1990. The members all met in high school in 1987 and founded Local H three years later. They are known for their unorthodox two-piece setup.
Further Seems Forever is an American rock band formed in 1998 in Pompano Beach, Florida. Over its initial eight-year run the band experienced several lineup changes, resulting in a different lead vocalist performing on each of their first three studio albums. Original singer Chris Carrabba recorded The Moon Is Down (2001) with the group before leaving to start Dashboard Confessional. He was replaced by Jason Gleason, who performed on How to Start a Fire (2003) but left the band the following year. Former Sense Field vocalist Jon Bunch joined Further Seems Forever for Hide Nothing (2004). The band broke up in 2006 but reunited four years later with Carrabba on vocals. Their fourth studio album, Penny Black, was released in 2012.
The Suicide Machines are an American punk rock band formed in March 1991 in Detroit, Michigan. During the course of their career, the band has released seven full-length albums on the labels Hollywood Records, Side One Dummy Records and Fat Wreck Chords, as well as several EPs and singles. They have experienced lineup changes over the years, all with founding member Jason Navarro as lead singer and front man. The contemporary lineup includes Ryan Vandeberghe on drums, Rich Tschirhart on bass and Justin Malek on guitar.

Hot Snakes are an American post-hardcore band led by Rick Froberg and John Reis, formed in 1999 in San Diego, California. Reis and Froberg had previously performed together in Pitchfork and Drive Like Jehu, after which Reis had found international success with Rocket from the Crypt. Hot Snakes disbanded in 2005 but reunited in 2011.

Based on a True Story is the second studio album by American pop punk band the Starting Line. The group's label Drive-Thru Records had a distribution deal which allowed MCA Records to acquire their bands. After MCA Records was absorbed into Geffen Records in mid-2003, the band spent most of 2004 writing and demoing songs for their next album. Following pre-production in July 2004, the band began recording for Based on a True Story, finishing in September. The album was recorded at various studios in New York state and California. Separate sessions were produced by Tim O'Heir, Howard Benson and Eric Rachel.

Devils Brigade is an American rock band formed as a side project by Rancid bassist Matt Freeman in 2000. In Devils Brigade Freeman performs a mix of punk rock and psychobilly styles, singing lead vocals and playing a double bass in contrast to the backing vocals and bass guitar he performs in Rancid. He was backed by his Rancid bandmates for singles released in 2003 and 2005, and recruited X drummer DJ Bonebrake to play on Devils Brigade's eponymous debut album in 2010.
Name Taken was an American rock band from Orange, California. They were originally known as All That's Left in October 1999 until they discovered that the name was already taken; thus the name "Name Taken". The band started in the eighth grade where they would play shows in their amphitheatre at lunch. They later succeeded to record for such compilations as Atticus I and Warped Tour 2002.
Babylon is the debut studio album by Welsh heavy metal band Skindred. The band was formed from members of the disbanded band Dub War, including leader Benji Webbe, and signed to RCA Records in 2002, who released the album on 3 July. The band felt that they were being treated poorly by the label, and left in 2004, signing with Bieler Bros. Records, who released the album internationally in association with Lava Records. Each version released featured a significantly altered track listing.
Controversy Loves Company is the debut studio album by American rock band the Audition, released on September 20, 2005 through Victory Records. After some membership changes, the band released their debut EP in mid-2004, and by November 2004, they had signed to Victory Records. With Danny Stevens moving from guitarist to vocalist, the band spent three months writing material, until they recorded their debut album in April 2005. Sessions were held at Nada Studios in New Windsor, New York with producer John Naclerio. Controversy Loves Company is a pop-punk album that drew comparison to the work of Fall Out Boy, Hot Rod Circuit, and Taking Back Sunday.
Bound by Ties of Blood and Affection is the sixth studio album by the Santa Cruz, California-based hardcore punk band Good Riddance, released May 20, 2003 through Fat Wreck Chords. Like their previous two studio albums it was recorded at The Blasting Room in Fort Collins, Colorado with the production team of Bill Stevenson and Jason Livermore. It was their last album with drummer Dave Wagenschutz; following his departure the band slipped into a period of inactivity during which singer Russ Rankin formed Only Crime with Stevenson. Good Riddance would return in 2006 for My Republic with drummer Sean Sellers, who had previously been in the band from 1996 to 1999.
The discography of Alkaline Trio, a Chicago-based punk rock band, consists of nine studio albums, three compilation albums, one split album, four EPs, one video album, sixteen singles, one demo, nine digital releases, and thirteen music videos. Alkaline Trio formed in 1996 with an initial lineup of Matt Skiba, Rob Doran (bass), and Glenn Porter (drums). This lineup released the band's demo tape and the 1997 single "Sundials" on Chicago record label Johann's Face Records, after which Doran left the band and was replaced by Dan Andriano. The group then signed to Asian Man Records and released their debut EP For Your Lungs Only and album Goddamnit in 1998. A second EP, I Lied My Face Off, followed in 1999 and resulted in their first music video, for the song "Goodbye Forever". In 2000 Asian Man released the band's second album, Maybe I'll Catch Fire, as well as the compilation album Alkaline Trio, collecting most of their previously released early material. Porter then left and was replaced by Mike Felumlee.
