Sunny Kurian is a Sharjah-based Indian-born pediatrician [1] [2] [3] and the founder president of the UAE wing of the Indian Academy of Pediatrics (IAP). [1] [4] He is the founder trustee of the Indian Business and Professional Council (IBPC) [5] and the chairman of Dr. Sunny's Group [6] [7] [8] which he established in Sharjah in 1990. [9]

Biography

Sunny Kurian was born in the Indian state of Goa, then a Union Territory, in a Malayali family settled there. [1] His medical education was at the J. J. M. Medical College, Davangere under Mysore University, [5] from where he secured his master's degree (MD) in pediatrics. [1] He moved to Sharjah in the United Arab Emirates in 1989 and a year later, established his own medical practice under the name, Dr. Sunny's Clinic. [1] [5] The centre slowly grew to become a business conglomerate, Dr. Sunny's Healthcare Group, with six multispecialty medical centres and business interests in pharmaceuticals, opticals and education. [1] [5] [10] [11]

Kurian, holder of a higher degree in adolescent medicine (PGDAP), is a founder trustee of the Indian Business and Professional Council (IBPC) [5] and holds the position of its vice chairman. [1] [6] [11] [12] He is a founder of the Association of Kerala Medical Graduates (AKMG), an affiliate association of IBPC involved in charitable and educational projects, of which he served as the first secretary general and is the president of its Sharjah chapter. [1] [11] [13] His contribution is reported behind the establishment of the United Arab Emirates branch of the Indian Academy of Pediatrics in 2011, the first branch of the academy outside India. [1] [6] He also sits on the board of trustees of the India Trade and Exhibitions Centre, Middle East (ITEC). [1] [14]

Kurian was ranked 70 among the Top 100 Indian Leaders in the UAE by the Forbes Middle East in 2014. [6] Forbes included him again in their annual list of Top 100 Healthcare Leaders in the Middle East in 2024. [15] Arabian Business, a Dubai based business magazine rated him in 2014 as the 39th richest Indian in the United Arab Emirates. [5] He received the Kerala State Business Excellence Award for the category, Kerala Global Achievers in 2014. [16] He is also a recipient of the Sharjah Economic Excellence Award twice (2008, 2009) and the Sharjah Police Appreciation Award in 2011 and 2012. [1]

In 2015, The Sunny Healthcare group was acquired by Abu Dhabi based NMC Health group for US$64 million. [17] Subsequent to acquisition, NMC Health renamed The Sunny Healthcare group as NMC Sunny. [18]

Sunny Kurian, a known sports enthusiast involved in promoting local sporting events such as Berry Hills Indian Basketball League [19] and Dr Sunny's Medical Centre AKCC cricket tournament, [11] [20] is married to his former classmate at Davangere, Meera Kurien, a consultant physician[ citation needed ]. The couple have two daughters and the family lives in Sharjah. [1]

It was established in 1963, in Mumbai, India and claims to have 23,000 members, as of the year 2013 The head office of IAP is in Mumbai while Delhi is the seat of its official publication – Indian Pediatrics, a MEDLINE indexed medical journal. It also publishes another medical journal called Indian Journal of Practical Pediatrics from Chennai.

NMC Health is a healthcare chain and distribution business in the United Arab Emirates (UAE). The company is headquartered in Abu Dhabi and has branch offices in Dubai, Ajman, Al Ain and Northern Emirates. The company operates and manages over 200 facilities in 19 countries.

Lala Suraj Nandan Prasad (1914–2009) was an Indian pediatrician and a former professor of pediatrics of the Patna Medical College and Hospital whose efforts were reportedly behind the establishment of the department of pediatrics and the development of the children's ward into a 250-bed Children's Hospital at the institution. He was the founder president of the Indian Academy of Pediatrics when the organization was formed in 1964 though the merger of the erstwhile Indian Pediatric Society and the Association of Pediatricians of India. The Government of India awarded him the fourth highest Indian civilian award of Padma Shri in 1974.
