Sunset Bar and Grill is located within walking distance of Princess Juliana International, and a short drive from the cruise ship docks on the island. The bar is located just to the south of runway 10 at the airport, on Maho Beach. The bar is also within walking distance of many resorts, including the Royal Islander Club.
The low approach made by heavy jet liners over Maho Beach is part of what has made the bar popular. The bar posts departure and arrival times of all commercial aircraft on TVs in the bar area, and also sells the "Jet Blast", a shot named for the high winds created by departing aircraft, and Pizzas named after different airlines. The bar was voted "Best Beach Bar in St. Maarten" in 2011, in a poll conducted by the Daily Herald St. Maarten newspaper. [2]

Princess Juliana International Airport is the main airport on the Caribbean island of Saint Martin. The airport is located on the Dutch side of the island, in the country of Sint Maarten, close to the shore of Simpson Bay Lagoon. In 2015, the airport handled 1,829,543 passengers and around 60,000 aircraft movements. The airport serves as a hub for Winair and is the major gateway for the smaller Leeward Islands, including Anguilla, Saba, Saint Barthélemy and Sint Eustatius. ALM Antillean Airlines Flight 980 was a flight scheduled to fly from John F. Kennedy International Airport in New York City to Princess Juliana International Airport in St. Maarten, Netherlands Antilles, on May 2, 1970. After several unsuccessful landing attempts, the aircraft's fuel was exhausted, and it made a forced water landing (ditching) in the Caribbean Sea 48 km off St. Croix, with 23 fatalities and 40 survivors. The accident is one of a small number of intentional water ditchings of jet airliners.

The COVID-19 pandemic in French Saint Martin was a part of the ongoing global viral pandemic of coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19), which was confirmed to have reached the French overseas collectivity of Saint Martin on 1 March 2020. The island is split in a Dutch and French part, with the main airport on the Dutch side and the major harbour on the French side. The first positive test was a French couple from Saint Martin who returned from France via Saint Barthélemy on 1 March 2020. They were screened and tested positive on the airport, but are counted on the French count. The island had a population of 35,334 in 2017.
