Supermercados Selectos is a Puerto Rican supermarket company. [1] It is one of a number of well-known Puerto Rican supermarkets chains, along with Pueblo Supermarkets and others.

History

The first four Supermercados Selectos stores opened in 1978, after Carlos Torres, a Puerto Rican businessman, took the initiative of organizing a number of small mom-and-pop ("colmado") stores group into one integrated company, in order to compete against larger supermarkets. (See certificate of incorporation.) [2] Another one of the chain's first owners was Ignacio Veloz Camejo, honorary president of Centro Unido de Detallistas de Puerto Rico since 1991. [3]

In 1995, the chain was purchased by Edwin Ortiz. [4]

By 2010, the chain operated a total of 32 stores. [5] By 2014, the chain had reached 37 operating stores. [6]

It also has other major tenants such as a Party City, OfficeMax, Planet Fitness, Chuck E. Cheese, and a PetSmart. It was formerly anchored by a Kmart in its original shopping center portion which closed in 2020, which is now scheduled to become a Ross Dress for Less planned to open in 2025. The mall is divided in two portions, Plaza Centro I which opened in 1986 as an outdoor shopping center, and Plaza Centro II which opened between 1999 and 2000 as the enclosed mall portion.

Plaza del Atlántico is an enclosed shopping mall located in Arecibo, Puerto Rico. Anchor stores for the mall is a Tiendas Capri and a Grand Stores, other main stores in the mall consists of All Ways 99, Me Salve, Rainbow, Exentrix, La Nueva Era, and others. It was formerly anchored by a Kmart store which was announced to close in November 2019.
