Superstratum is an instrumental album composed and arranged by American pianist John Burke. The album was inspired by the layers of Earth and its atmosphere. [1] A self-released title, Superstratum is Burke's first multi-instrumental album. Consisting of all Atlanta-based musicians, the album features piano by Burke, violins by Kevin Chaney, guitar by David Deveaux, percussion by Schafer Gray, cello by Noah Johnson, clarinet by Corinne Klemenc, and flute by Erin Wallace. "Misty" is a jazz standard written in 1954 by pianist Erroll Garner. He composed it as an instrumental in the traditional 32-bar format and recorded it for the album Contrasts (1955). Lyrics were added later by Johnny Burke. It became the signature song of Johnny Mathis, appearing on his 1959 album Heavenly and reaching number 12 on the U.S. Pop Singles chart later that year. The song has been recorded many times, including versions by Ella Fitzgerald and Frank Sinatra.
Fred Hersch is an American jazz pianist and educator. He has performed solo and led his own groups, including the Pocket Orchestra consisting of piano, trumpet, voice, and percussion. He was the first person to play weeklong engagements as a solo pianist at the Village Vanguard in New York City. He has recorded more than 70 of his jazz compositions. Hersch has been nominated for several Grammy Awards, and, as of December 2014, had been on the Jazz Studies faculty of the New England Conservatory since 1980.

Sample contributed to four of the songs, but died from mesothelioma before the album's completion. After placing the project on hold for a year, Arie decided to collaborate with other artists to complete it.
