Suresh Ranjan Dharmasena (born 24 June 1989), also known as DSR Dharmasena, is a Sri Lankan wheelchair tennis player. [1] He became a Paralympic competitor after sustaining injuries in the civil war. [2] He made his first Paralympic appearance representing Sri Lanka at the 2020 Summer Paralympics. [3] [4]

Biography

He was raised in Kahatagasdigiliya in the Anuradhapura District. He pursued primary and secondary education at the Kahatagasdigiliya Central College. [5] He joined Sri Lanka Armoured Corps at the age of 18 in 2007 and served as a lance bombardier (artillery regiment) in the Sri Lankan Army. [6]

His left foot was severely injured and had to be amputated when he stepped on an anti-personnel mine on 23 February 2009. [7] It was amputated when he was on his duty in the Pottuvil Lagoon and his army career was brought to an end just before the end of the 26 year long civil war. [8] After becoming a victim of LTTE terrorist attack, he underwent rehabilitation process at the Ragama Ranaviru Sevana for a period of four months. [5]

Career

Suresh was encouraged to take up the sport of wheelchair tennis by the then Brigadier Shiran Abeysekara in 2010. He claimed the bronze medal along with Lasantha Ranaweera in the men's doubles event at the 2018 Asian Para Games. It was the first time Sri Lanka had won a medal in an international wheelchair competition. [5] He won the 2018 Negombo Open ITF Series tournament after defeating Korea's top seed Ha-Gel Lee in straight sets. [9]

In May 2021, he won both the men's singles and men's doubles events at the 14th Sri Lanka Open Wheelchair Tennis tournament. [10] He was a key member of the Sri Lankan team which reached the semi-finals of the 2021 BNP Paribas World Team Cup Qualifiers. [11]

He received bipartite invitation to take part at the 2020 Summer Paralympics following his notable performances at the 2021 BNP Paribas World Team Cup Qualification round held in Portugal. [12] During the Tokyo Paralympics, he competed in section four of the first round event in the men's wheelchair tennis competition. [13] [14] [15]

On 6 March 2022, he won the men's singles title after defeating Sung-Bong Han in three sets 6–2, 3-6 and 7–5 in the final of the 2022 International Wheelchair tennis tournament which was played at the Sri Lanka Tennis Association courts. [16]

Edirimuni Dinuka Nishan Perera Karunaratne is a Sri Lankan badminton player.

Herath Mudiyansalage Dinesh Priyantha, also simply known as Dinesh Priyantha, is a Sri Lankan Paralympic track and field athlete who competes in javelin T46 events. He also served as an important member for the Sri Lanka Army during the Sri Lankan Civil War. He was disabled after being shot at his left arm during the final stages of the war. He is the defending Paralympic champion in men's javelin throw F46 category. On 30 August 2021, he became the first ever Sri Lankan to win a gold medal at the Paralympics when he won the men's javelin throw F46 category. He is the current Paralympic and World record holder in men's javelin throw for F46 category.

Nimali Waliwarsha Konda Liyanarachchi is a Sri Lankan 800 m runner and current national record holder in women's 1500m event. She is also believed to be the first Sri Lankan woman to have competed in steeplechase events. She became the first Sri Lankan woman to complete the distance of 3000 metres in steeplechase event under 11 minutes. She won the best athlete award twice at the Presidential award ceremonies by the Sports Ministry including the Most Outstanding Sportswoman of the Year in 2015. She is currently attached to Sri Lanka Air Force.

Lucky Dharmasena also known as Lucky Alagoda is a Sri Lankan former badminton player. Lucky Dharmasena is a former national badminton champion who is also regarded as one of the greatest female badminton players to have represented the country both at national and international levels.

Cocoa production contributes to the national economy of Sri Lanka. It is grown in fairly dense shade and generally cultivated under coconut and rubber. Ranindu Dilshan Liyanage also simply known as Ranindu Liyanage is a Sri Lankan chess player and current national champion. In July 2021, he became the first Sri Lankan man to participate at the FIDE Chess World Cup. He is currently coached by Uzbekistani chess grandmaster Alexei Barsov.

Mathilda Thanuja Karlsson is a Sri Lankan born Swedish equestrian athlete. Mathila hails from Sri Lanka and was adopted by her Swedish parents when she was three months old. In 2021 she qualified as an individual rider for the 2020 Summer Olympics in Tokyo, being the first Sri Lankan equestrian at the Olympic Games. She also became the first Sri Lankan to qualify for the Tokyo Olympics. Her horse is named as Chopin VA.

Mahesh Priyamal Jayakody, also known as Mahesh Jayakodi or Priyamal Jayakodi, is a Sri Lankan a para-rower and a soldier. He made his debut Paralympic appearance representing Sri Lanka at the 2020 Summer Paralympics. He is the first Sri Lankan rower to compete at the Paralympics.

The men's singles wheelchair tennis tournament at the 2020 Paralympic Games in Tokyo was held at the Ariake Tennis Park in Kōtō, Tokyo from 27 August to 4 September 2021.

Samitha Dulan Kodithuwakku also known as Samitha Dulan is a Sri Lankan Paralympic track and field athlete. He made his maiden Paralympic appearance representing Sri Lanka at the 2020 Summer Paralympics.

Kumudu Priyanka Dissanayake Mudiyanselage is a Sri Lankan Paralympic track and field athlete who is also a current world record holder in women's 200m T45 category. She made her maiden Paralympic appearance representing Sri Lanka at the 2020 Summer Paralympics.
