Susan Schechter Bortner (published as Susan Schechter) is an American survey statistician, formerly in US Government service and now a researcher at NORC at the University of Chicago, a private nonprofit social research organization.

Education and career

Schechter graduated from Montgomery Blair High School in Maryland in 1972. [1] She earned a bachelor's degree in criminology from the University of Maryland, College Park, and a master's degree in human development from Antioch University. [2] [3]

Her positions in government service included working as a survey researcher in the National Center for Health Statistics, as a senior statistician in the Office of Management and Budget, focusing on the classification of race and ethnicity, and in the United States Census Bureau, where she headed the American Community Survey from 2006 to 2010. After more than 25 years of government work, she moved to NORC at the University of Chicago in 2010, where she became Project Director for the Medicare Current Beneficiary Survey. [2] [3]

Recognition

Schechter was named a Fellow of the American Statistical Association in 2005. [4] She chaired the Social Statistics Section of the American Statistical Association in 2006. [5] In 2017, NORC gave her their Norman Bradburn Career Achievement Award. [3]

Angela Muriel Dean is a British statistician who specializes in the design of experiments. She is a professor emeritus at the Ohio State University, and was the chair of the Section on Physical and Engineering Sciences of the American Statistical Association for 2012.

Wendy L. Martinez is an American statistician. She directs the Mathematical Statistics Research Center of the Bureau of Labor Statistics, and is the coordinating editor of the journal Statistics Surveys. In 2018, Martinez was elected president of the American Statistical Association for the 2020 term.

Mary Elinore Thompson is a Canadian statistician. She is Distinguished Professor Emerita of Statistics and Actuarial Science at the University of Waterloo, the former president of the Statistical Society of Canada, and the founding scientific director of the Canadian Statistical Sciences Institute. Her research interests include survey methodology and statistical sampling; she is also known for her work applying statistics to guide tobacco control policy.

Aparna V. Huzurbazar is an American statistician known for her work using graphical models to understand time-to-event data. She is the author of a book on this subject, Flowgraph Models for Multistate Time-to-Event Data.

Carol Anne Gotway Crawford is an American mathematical statistician and from 2018 to 2020 served as Chief Statistician of the U.S. Government Accountability Office (GAO). She joined the GAO in May 2017. From August 2014 to April 2017, she was with the Department of Agriculture's National Agricultural Statistics Service. She was formerly at the National Center for Environmental Health of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. She also holds an adjunct faculty position at the Rollins School of Public Health of Emory University, and is an expert in biostatistics, spatial analysis, environmental statistics, and the statistics of public health. She also maintains an interest in geoscience and has held executive roles in the International Association for Mathematical Geosciences.

Judith T. Lessler is an American statistician and expert on survey methodology, particularly on surveys relating to health and epidemiology.

Susan S. Ellenberg is an American statistician specializing in the design of clinical trials and in the safety of medical products. She is a professor of biostatistics, medical ethics and health policy in the Perelman School of Medicine at the University of Pennsylvania. She was the 1993 president of the Society for Clinical Trials and the 1999 President of the Eastern North American Region of the International Biometric Society.
