Susan E. Stone is an American nurse midwife and academic administrator who is the distinguished chair of midwifery at Frontier Nursing University. She was previously its president from 2001 to 2023.
Stone worked was an obstetrical nurse before becoming a certified nurse-midwife and working in Upstate New York as a midwife from 1991 to 1998. [1] In 2001,she earned a Doctorate of Nursing Science from the University of Tennessee Health Science Center. [1] Her dissertation was titled,Factors Associated with a High Rate of Cesarean Section in a Small Rural Hospital. [2] Michael A. Carter was Stone's doctoral advisor. [2]
Stone served as president of the Frontier Nursing University from 2001 to 2023. [3] She was elected a fellow of the American College of Nurse-Midwives (ACNM) in 2005 and of the American Academy of Nursing in 2012. [4] She served as the ACNM president from 2018 to 2019. [5] In 2018,she was elected a member of the National Academy of Medicine. [6] She transitioned to distinguished chair of midwifery in 2023. [3]
In the United States,a Certified Nurse-Midwife (CNM) is a nurse midwife who exceeds the International Confederation of Midwives' essential competencies for a midwife and is also an advanced practice registered nurse,having completed registered nursing and midwifery education leading to practice as a nurse midwife and credentialing as a Certified Nurse-Midwife. CNMs provide care of women across their lifespan,including pregnancy and the postpartum period,and well woman care and birth control. Mary Carson Breckinridge was an American nurse midwife and the founder of the Frontier Nursing Service (FNS),which provided comprehensive family medical care to the mountain people of rural Kentucky. FNS served remote and impoverished areas off the road and rail system but accessible by horseback. She modeled her services on European practices and sought to professionalize American nurse-midwives to practice autonomously in homes and decentralized clinics. Although Breckinridge's work demonstrated efficacy by dramatically reducing infant and maternal mortality in Appalachia,at a comparatively low cost,her model of nurse-midwifery never took root in the United States.
