Sushmita Banerjee is a Kathak exponent, choreographer and dance researcher from India. [1] Sushmita has been under the guidance of Pandit Vijay Shankar and Smt. Maya Chatterjee briefly learned from Pandit Birju Maharaj. [2]

She is a graded artiste of Doordarshan and is an empanelled artist of the Indian Council for Cultural Relations. Sushmita has revived the Katha Shaili of Kathak under the able guidance of Padma Vibhushan Pandit Birju Maharaj. [2] She was featured in Swarthmore College professor Pallibi Chakrevorty's book, "Bells of Change" for her contribution to Kathak and Indian classical dance. [3]

Educational background

Sushmita graduated with a bachelor's degree in English literature from Loreto College in Kolkata. She also went on to receive her master's degree in English literature from Calcutta University. [4]

Performances

Sushmita has performed in major festivals all over India and the world. She was invited by UNESCO to present her choreographic works in Tokyo [5] in 2007. She had visited Japan previously in 1992 - 1993 to present Kathak in its original richness and complex form. [5] Sushmita has performed in other international cultural venues such as: [6]

Teaching

Sushmita Banerjee's gurukul in Kolkata welcomes students from different parts of the world such as U.S.A, Germany, Kuwait, Switzerland, Russia, Spain and Holland. [7] Sushmita along with her students from Geneva's Ateliers d' Ethnomusicologie have staged several productions in Geneva and Kerala. [8] Sushmita recently started The Kerala Gharana, a platform for learning, teaching and sharing of Indian dance and culture. [1] Sushmita is also closely associated with cultural organisation, SPICMACAY. She conducts workshops around India in educational institutions like schools and universities. Her association with SPICMACAY has enabled her to work with gifted children from all around India. [9]

Pandit Birju Maharaj was an Indian dancer, composer, singer, and exponent of the Lucknow "Kalka-Bindadin" Gharana of Kathak dance in India. He was a descendant of the Maharaj family of Kathak dancers, which includes his two uncles, Shambhu Maharaj and Lachhu Maharaj, and his father and guru, Acchan Maharaj. He also practised Hindustani classical music and was a vocalist. After working along with his uncle, Shambhu Maharaj at Bhartiya Kala Kendra, later the Kathak Kendra, New Delhi, he remained head of the latter, for several years, until his retirement in 1998 when he opened his own dance school, Kalashram, also in Delhi.

<i>Kathak</i> Indian classical dance form originated in North India

Kathak is one of the eight major forms of Indian classical dance. Its origin is attributed to the traveling bards in ancient northern India known as Kathakar ("storyteller"), who communicated stories from the Hindu epics and mythology through dance, songs and music. Its name derives from the Sanskrit word katha which means "story", and kathakar which means "the one who tells a story", or "to do with stories".

Pandit Bajinath Prasad also known as Pandit Lachhu Maharaj (1901–1978) was an Indian classical dancer and choreographer of Kathak dance. He came from a family of illustrious Kathak exponents in Lucknow, and also worked as film choreographer, Hindi cinema, most notably Mughal-e-Azam (1960) and Pakeezah (1972). He was awarded the 1957 Sangeet Natak Akademi Award, the highest award for performing artists, conferred by the Sangeet Natak Akademi, India's National Academy for Music, Dance and Drama. He was paternal uncle of Pandit Birju Maharaj.

Saswati Sen is an Indian dancer and choreographer, and an exponent of Kathak, an Indian classical dance form. She was a senior disciple of Pandit Birju Maharaj, and still teaches and performs at his Kalashram Institute in the Jor Bagh district of New Delhi.

Swara Samrat festival is a four-day annual festival of Indian classical music and dance held during the winters in Kolkata, India. A student of the Kathak dance under Pandit Birju Maharaj, she trained at the Shriram Bharatiya Kala Kendra in New Delhi, and has been credited with popularising and documenting the techniques of Kathak in Maharashtra in the 1980s.
