The Sustainment Command (Expeditionary), commonly referred to as an "ESC", is a United States Army logistics headquarters. Sustainment is "the provision of logistics, financial management, personnel services, and health service support necessary to maintain operations until successful mission completion." [1]
The Sustainment Command (Expeditionary), commanded by a Brigadier General, is task-organized with one or more Sustainment Brigades, Transportation Brigades, and/or Movement Control Battalion's for theater opening, theater distribution, or theater closing operations. [2] It commands and controls all assigned and attached units as directed by the Sustainment Command (Theater).
An ESC is made up of 74 military occupational specialities (MOSs) and 40 branches and sections, with that, it is important that planning guidance is shared to allow leaders and soldiers to identify the specific and essential tasks for each of the sections involved. This is also important for the implementation of joint training events. [3]
In 2019, there were three active component and six reserve which made up the nine ESCs in the Army. Each active ESC is located together with a corps. [4]
