Sheikh Mohammad Aslam (known as Sweden Aslam) is a Bangladeshi gangster who is convicted of 22 cases including 9 murders from the mid-1980s until he was apprehended in 1997. [1]

Aslam was released from Kashimpur High Security Central Jail in Gazipur District on bail on 3 September 2024 after being in prison for 27 years. [2]

Background

Aslam is originally from Chatiar area under Nawabganj Upazila, Dhaka. His father was Sheikh Jinnat Ali. [2] He lived in Indira Road in Dhaka. He completed his SSC from Tejgaon Polytechnic High School (now Tejgaon Government High School). [3] Being married to Iti, a Swedish expatriate, Aslam got the nickname "Sweden". [3] [2]

Criminal activities

Aslam had control over the several area in Dhaka including Kawran Bazar, Tejturi Bazar, Tejgaon, and Sher-e-Bangla Nagar. [3] He was first accused of killing a teenager, Shakil, at Nazneen School in East Rajabazar. [3]

After the accusation of killing Galib, a Jubo League leader, on 23 March 1997, Aslam was arrested by the police on 26 May. [2] At that time, Bangladesh Awami League party was in power of Bangladesh government and Jubo League is the youth wing of the party. [3]

Mamunul Haque is a Bangladeshi Islamic scholar and the Joint Secretary-General of Hefazat-e-Islam Bangladesh, emerged as an Islamist leader in the late 2010s, particularly following the deadliest events of the Siege of Dhaka. The Jail Killing refers to the murder of four Awami League leaders in prison by the planners of army officers who launched the 15 August 1975 Bangladesh coup d'état. The four were former President Syed Nazrul Islam, former prime ministers Tajuddin Ahmed and Muhammad Mansur Ali, and President of Awami League A. H. M Qamaruzzaman.

Kashimpur Central Jail, also known as Kashimpur Prison or Kashimpur Jail, is a major high-security correctional facility located at Kashimpur union in the Gazipur district of Bangladesh. It is one of the largest and most well-known prisons in the country, as well as one of the biggest prisons in Asia.

2024 Bangladesh post-resignation violence took place after the resignation of Sheikh Hasina, targeting Awami League supporters, religious minorities, government and security officials. On the day of the resignation 25 police officers were killed. According to the Daily Sun at least 119 were killed that day. According to Prothom Alo 1494 sculptures and monuments were vandalized across Bangladesh after the resignation of Sheikh Hasina.
