Prior to European colonization, the area that is now Sweet Gum was inhabited by the Cherokee people and other Indigenous peoples for thousands of years.
The community was named for sweet gum trees near the original town site. [2] A variant name is "Sweetgum". [1] A post office called Sweetgum was established in 1887, and remained in operation until 1939. [3]

Sweetgum is one of the main valuable forest trees in the southeastern United States, and is a popular ornamental tree in temperate climates. It is recognizable by the combination of its five-pointed star-shaped leaves and its hard, spiked fruits. It is currently classified in the plant family Altingiaceae, but was formerly considered a member of the Hamamelidaceae.
