Syahrial Oesman (born 25 May 1955) is an Indonesian politician currently of the Nasdem Party who served as the governor of South Sumatra between 2003 and 2008 and previously as regent of Ogan Komering Ulu Regency between 2000 and 2003. After his gubernatorial term ended,he was convicted of bribery and was imprisoned for three years.
Oesman was born on 25 May 1955. His father left the family when Oesman was a child,and he was raised by his mother Zaleha Oesman. Oesman later enrolled at Sriwijaya University,studying engineering. [1]
After his graduation,Oesman began to work as a civil servant. He began to participate in politics following the fall of Suharto,defeating Herman Deru by just one vote at the local legislature's vote and becoming elected as regent of Ogan Komering Ulu Regency in 1999. Prior to the expiration of his term there,he ran as governor of South Sumatra in 2003,again defeating the incumbent Rosihan Arsyad,again with a single vote's margin. He was a member of Golkar until 2004,when he moved to PDI-P. [1]
As governor,Oesman promoted investment in the energy sector,attracting investors to the province. He was the first governor to establish direct transfers from the regional budget to villages,and he also lobbied the national government to develop the Port of Tanjung Api-Api,designed as an international seaport. [1] However,he was defeated by Alex Noerdin in the 2008 gubernatorial election. [2] He had resigned early from his gubernatorial post,on 19 June 2008,for this reelection bid. [3] In 2009,he was convicted of bribery related to land acquisition for Tanjung Api-Api's development,and was sentenced to one year's imprisonment by Jakarta's Corruption Court. [4] Upon appeal to the Supreme Court of Indonesia,Syahrial's sentence was increased to three years. [5]
Following his release,Oesman became a member of the Nasdem Party and became its provincial chairman in South Sumatra. [6] He declared his intent to run again for the position of governor in the 2018 gubernatorial election,but withdrew his bid in favor of Herman Deru. [7]
South Sumatra is a province of Indonesia,located on the southeast of the island of Sumatra. The capital and largest city of the province is the city of Palembang. The province borders the provinces of Jambi to the north,Bengkulu to the west and Lampung to the south,as well a maritime border with the Bangka Belitung Islands to the east. It is the largest province in the island of Sumatra,and it is slightly smaller than Portugal. The Bangka Strait in the east separates South Sumatra and the island of Bangka,which is part of the Bangka Belitung Islands province. The province has an area of 91,592.43 km2 (35,364 sq mi) and had a population of 8,467,432 at the 2020 Census;the official estimate as at mid-2022 was 8,657,008. The province is rich in natural resources,such as petroleum,natural gas and coal. The province is inhabited by many different ethnic groups,with Palembangese being largest ethnic group. Most speak the Palembang language,which is mutually intelligible to both Indonesian and local Palembang Malay. Other ethnic groups include the Javanese,Sundanese,Minangkabau and Chinese. Most are concentrated in urban areas and are largely immigrants from other parts of Indonesia.
Alex Noerdin is a former Governor of South Sumatra between 2008 and 2018.
Ogan Komering Ilir Regency is a regency of South Sumatra Province,Indonesia. It takes its name from the Ogan River and the Komering River,which are the two main rivers that drain the area. The name Ilir means downstream. The administrative centre is the town of Kayu Agung. The regency borders Palembang,Ogan Ilir Regency and Banyuasin Regency to the north,Bangka Strait,and Java Sea to the east,Lampung Province to the south,and Ogan Ilir Regency,and East Ogan Komering Ulu Regency to the west.

Eddy Yusuf was an Indonesian politician. A member of the Democratic Party and later the People's Conscience Party,he served as Deputy Governor of South Sumatra from 2008 to 2013 and Regent of Ogan Komering Ulu from 2003 to 2008. He died in Baturaja on 8 March 2022,at the age of 66.
The Port of Tanjung Api-Api is a seaport in Banyuasin Regency,South Sumatra,Indonesia. Completed in 2007,it began passenger ferry operations to Muntok in 2013,and cargo operations in 2019.
Annas Maamun is an Indonesian former politician presently imprisoned for corruption who served as governor of Riau between February and September 2014. He was previously the regent of Rokan Hilir Regency between 2006 and 2014. His term as governor was ended by a corruption scandal,which led to him being imprisoned for six years. After his release in 2020,he was once more arrested for a bribery case from his time as governor,and sentenced to another year in prison in 2022.
