Syed Babar Ashraf is an Indian social activist and leader belonging to the Barelvi movement of Sunni Islam. He is the Founder President of Sada-e-Sufia-e-Hind, a representative body of Sufis in India. [2] [3]

He had formerly been the General secretary of All India Ulema and Mashaikh Board from 17 December 2013, but was sacked from the post on 16 August 2015, after anti-organisational activities. [4] [5]

Activism

During the pre-election period in India, Ashraf exhorted Muslims to vote those candidates "who are secular and have a clean image irrespective of their party affiliations." [6] He denounced any move that was detrimental to the national good of the country. He has always been a strong critic of Wahhabism, Salafism, and associated ideologies. [7] He has been promoting a Dargah Act to manage dargahs of Sufi saints according to Sufi traditions. [8] Many Muslim heritage sites under Archaeological Survey of India belong to Sufi Muslims that have now been usurped. Ashraf is against such usurpation. [8]

Barelvi and Khadim Controversies

Ashraf said that controversies should not be happen in the Dargah of Khwaja, he shown anger to Sarwar Chishty and said he is the main accused of the controversy. [9] [10]

Allah-Om controversy

He spoke against Arshad Madani, principal of Darul Uloom Deoband, an Indian seminary representing the Deobandi movement after Madani said Allah and Om are same at an event at Ramlila Maidan. He said:

Religious figures should not give this type of Political speeches. No one can ask people who say Om to say Allah. Muslim should be aware of these political speeches instead should focus on their child and their future. [11]

The Darul Ifta Manzar-e-Islam, Markazi Darul Ifta of Jamiatur Raza, All India Tanzeem Ulama-e-Islam, All India Muslim Jamaat and their scholars had issued fatwa against the theory.

Bitho Sharif Dargah is a Dargah (shrine) of Sufi Saint Makhdoom Syed Shah Durwesh Ashraf also known as Khanquah Durweshia Ashrafia Chishtia. It is located in village Bitho Sharif of Gaya district in the Indian state of Bihar.

Sufi Festival is an annual two-days Sufi Music Festival held in Bibi Kamal Dargah, Kako Sharif in the Jehanabad district of Bihar to commemorate the death anniversary of the Sufi Saint Bibi Kamal, daughter of Shahabuddin Peer Jagjot. It is organised by the Dargah Committee and Tourism Department of Government of Bihar.

Makhdoom Syed Minhajuddin Rasti Gilani Firdausi (1250-1381) was a Sufi saint of the Firdausiyya Silsila. He was disciple and mureed of the Syed Sheikh Sharfuddin Yehya Maneri. He was died in Phulwari Sharif and laid to rest at Tamtam Padhav in Phulwari Sharif, Patna, Bihar. He is known to be the first sufi saint who came to Phulwari Sharif.

Nanhe Mian Dargah is a Shrine (Dargah) of Syed Nanhe Mian Shah, a Sufi saint of 14th century. It is located at the Izzatnagar Railway Station in Bareilly district of Uttar Pradesh. He was in the Qadri silsila chain of Sheikh Abdul Qadir Jilani. The shrine was built in 1564. In 2022, The IMC issued notice to remove the Dargah from the place.

The Chhoti Dargah is a shrine located in Maner Sharif, Patna district of Indian state of Bihar. It is the shrine of Makhdum Syed Shah Daulat Maneri and Ibrahim Khan Kaskar. It was built by Ibrahim Khan Kaskar in 1619. It is under control of Archaeological Survey of India. Is is nearby the Badi Dargah where Makhdoom Yahya Maneri is buried.

Amthua Sharif Dargah is a shrine located in Amthua Sharif about 13 kilometers from Kako block of Jehanabad district in the Indian state of Bihar. It is a tomb of Syed Shah Muhammad Hayat Rahmani Qadri, a student of Syed Shah Hayat Data Kambal Shah. It is recognised under the Bihar Tourism Department and the Sufi Circuit associated with the Government of Bihar. The annual Urs-e-Rahmani is celebrated to commemorate the death anniversary of Hayat Rahmani.

Khwaja Syed Data Asghar Ali Khan (1832-1903) reverentially called as Data Kambal Shah was an Indian Sufi saint of Chishty-Qadri order. His shrine Kambal Shah Dargah is located at Purani Bazar in Muzaffarpur district in the Indian state of Bihar. He is known to be the teacher of the Syed Shah Hayat Rahmani Qadri of Amthua Sharif Dargah.

Ashfaque Hussain Naeemi was the Grand Mufti of Rajasthan. He belonged to Qadiriyya Silsila of Sufism and a leader of the Barelvi movement of Sunni Islam in Rajasthan. He was the founder of Madrasa Darul Uloom Ishaquiya, Ashfaqiya Institute and Ishaqiya Senior Secondary School in Jodhpur. He was the mureed of Mustafa Raza Khan Qadri and Mukhtar Ashraf. He was succeeded by Sher Muhammad Razvi as the Grand Mufti of Rajasthan. He is buried in Khanqah Ashfaqiya, Chokha, Rajasthan.

Urs-e-Qasmi is a three-day commemorative festival celebrated on the death anniversary of the Syed Shah Abul Qasim Ismail Hasan, a Sufi saint of Qadiriyya Barkaatiya order, it is celebrated at the Khanquah-e-Barkaatiya in Marehra Sharif, Etah district of Uttar Pradesh. Syed Najeeb Haider Noori is the present Sajjadanasheen of the dargah. It is celebrated on 3 Jumada Al' Awwal.

Khanquah-e-Barkaatiya is a Dargah complex in Marehra Sharif, Etah district of Uttar Pradesh. It is named after the Syed Shah Barkatullah, a 16th-century Sufi saint. The Khanquah was built by Nawab Muhammad Bangash Khan, then and first Nawab of Farrukhabad. There are seven shrines of different Sufi saints of Quadri Barkati order. It is one of the top known and visited Qadiriyya order shrines in India.

Syed Shah Fakhruddin Ashraf was an Indian Islamic scholar who belonged to the Barelvi movement of Sunni Islam. He served as the Sajjadanasheen of Dargah Makhdoom Ashraf Semnani from 2012 to 10 March 2023, his date of death. He had been the vice-president of All India Muslim Personal Law Board. He was the founder of Oriental College, Kichaucha, Madrasa Bibi Syed Shams-un-Nisa and Makhdoom Ashraf Junior High School.
