Sylvester M. Johnson is a retired American law enforcement officer. He served on the Philadelphia Police Department for forty-three years,including six years as the city's 13th Police Commissioner from January 4,2002,until January 7,2008. [1] [2]
Johnson joined the Philadelphia police department in 1964 and was soon assigned to the city's High Patrol. [1] In 1972 Johnson was awarded the medal of valor,the police department's highest award,for stopping the armed robbery of a supermarket in Cheltenham,Pennsylvania,while off-duty. [1]
Philadelphia Mayor John F. Street appointed Johnson as Police Commissioner to succeed outgoing police chief John Timoney. [1] He took office on January 4,2002. [2] Johnson was credited with lowering Philadelphia's murder rate during his first year in office. [1] He also improved some community relations. [1] He retired on January 7,2008. [1]

The "Boy in the Box" is an unidentified murder victim,a 4-to 6-year-old boy,whose naked,battered body was found on the side of Susquehanna Road,in Philadelphia,Pennsylvania,on February 25,1957. He appeared to have been cleaned and freshly groomed,with a haircut and trimmed fingernails,although he had been severely beaten,bruised and malnourished. The body was covered with scars,some of which were surgical. It is believed that the cause of death was homicide by blunt force trauma.
Willie L. Williams was the chief of the Los Angeles Police Department (LAPD) from 1992 to 1997,taking over after chief Daryl Gates' resignation following the 1992 Los Angeles riots. Williams was the first African-American Commissioner of the Philadelphia Police Department and the first African-American Chief of the LAPD. He was previously Commissioner of the Philadelphia Police Department (1998–2002) and held a variety of positions with the New York Police Department (1967–96),including its Chief of Department and First Deputy Commissioner. He worked for the Ministry of the Interior of Bahrain as a police consultant. Timoney drew both international praise and criticism for his handling of mass protests.
The 2007 Philadelphia mayoral election was held on November 6,2007 when Philadelphia,Pennsylvania,United States elected Michael Nutter as the Mayor of Philadelphia starting in 2008. The incumbent mayor,John F. Street was barred from seeking a third term because of term limits. The Democratic Party primary campaign saw two well-known,well-funded Philadelphia congressmen –Bob Brady and Chaka Fattah –eclipsed by self-funding businessman Tom Knox and reformist former Philadelphia City Council member Nutter,who won by a surprisingly large margin in the primary election on May 15. He went on to face Republican Party nominee Al Taubenberger in the general election,which he won by a large margin and with the lowest voter turnout in a Philadelphia mayoral election without an incumbent since 1951. Mayor Nutter was sworn in on January 7,2008.
Nizah Morris was an American transgender entertainer. On December 22,2002 Morris suffered a severe head injury from which she did not recover. Morris died on December 24,2002,at Thomas Jefferson University Hospital,when she was removed from life support. The Philadelphia Police Department's handling of Morris' death sparked protests in the LGBT community and led to several investigations into the police coverup of her death.

The 1985 MOVE bombing was the destruction by the Philadelphia Police Department of a residential home occupied by the MOVE Organization in Philadelphia,Pennsylvania,by dropping a explosive device from a helicopter,on May 13,1985. The Philadelphia Fire Department let the subsequent fire burn out of control following a standoff and firefight,with 61 previously evacuated homes burning to the ground over two city blocks. Six adults and five children died in the incident,with one adult and one child who lived in the house surviving. A lawsuit in federal court found that the city used excessive force and violated constitutional rights against unreasonable search and seizure.
