Sylvia Constantinidis (born December 3, 1962) is a Venezuelan-American pianist, composer, and conductor. [2]
Sylvia Constantinidis was born in Venezuela and began her study of music at an early age in Caracas. Her music teachers in Venezuela included Modesta Bor, Alberto Grau, Beatriz Bilbao and Isabel Aretz. [3] She continued her studies in Paris at the Ecole Martenot and the Sorbonne university in Paris.[ citation needed ] She worked as a pianist in Venezuela, playing with orchestras and touring, and graduated with a Bachelor of Arts and Music [4] [ failed verification ] from the Central University of Venezuela. In the 1990s, she graduated with a Masters in Piano Performance and later obtained a second Master in Music Theory and Composition, from the University of Miami. [5] She also has a Diploma of Advanced Graduate Studies in Music from Boston University. [6] [ full citation needed ]
Constantinidis received The Music Note Award 2003 [7] for her three children's operas Lincoln, Ponce de Leon, and The First Thanks Giving, which premiered in Florida. She was awarded the "Educator of Note Award 2003" by the Ethel and W. George Kennedy Family Foundation,[ citation needed ] and the ASCAP Plus Award for Concert Music in 2009 and 2010.[ citation needed ] She serves as artistic director of the Omorfia Contemporary Ensemble and the Southeast Composers Chamber Orchestra.[ citation needed ] Constantinidis has served as President of the Southeast Chapter of the National Association of Composers (NACUSA) in the United States. Giuseppe Martucci was an Italian composer, conductor, pianist and teacher. Sometimes called "the Italian Brahms", Martucci was notable among Italian composers of the era in that he dedicated his entire career to absolute music, and wrote no operas. As a composer and teacher he was influential in reviving Italian interest in non-operatic music. María Teresa Gertrudis de Jesús Carreño García was a Venezuelan pianist, soprano, composer, and conductor. Over the course of her 54-year concert career, she became an internationally renowned virtuoso pianist and was often referred to as the "Valkyrie of the Piano". Carreño was an early adopter of the works of one of her students, American composer and pianist Edward MacDowell (1860–1908) and premiered several of his compositions across the globe. She also frequently performed the works of Norwegian composer and pianist Edvard Grieg (1843–1907). Carreño composed approximately 75 works for solo piano, voice and piano, choir and orchestra, and instrumental ensemble. Several composers dedicated their compositions to Carreño, including Amy Beach and Edward MacDowell.
