Sylvia Melland (1906-1993) was a British painter and printmaker.
Melland was born in Altrincham, Cheshire. [1] She studied at the Manchester College of Art; the Byam Shaw School, 1925-8; the Euston Road School, 1937-9 and the Central School, 1957-60. [1] [2] Melland began her art career as a painter, but moved entirely to printmaking in the 1960s. [1] Melland was a member of the Artists' International Association, an anti-fascist group. [1]
Her work is included in the collections of the Manchester Art Gallery, [3] the British Museum [4] and the Tate Museum. [5]
Dame Jocelyn Barbara Hepworth was an English artist and sculptor. Her work exemplifies Modernism and in particular modern sculpture. Along with artists such as Ben Nicholson and Naum Gabo, Hepworth was a leading figure in the colony of artists who resided in St Ives during the Second World War.
