Sérgio Paese (born 15 December 1975 in Curitiba) is a former racing driver who has competed in the 1996 International Formula 3000 season and subsequently raced in Indy Lights and Stock Car Brasil.

Curitiba is the capital and largest city in the Brazilian state of Paraná. The city's population was 1,879,355 as of 2015, making it the eighth most populous city in Brazil and the largest in Brazil's South Region. The Curitiba Metropolitan area comprises 26 municipalities with a total population of over 3.2 million, making it the seventh most populous metropolitan area in the country.

Indy Lights is an American developmental automobile racing series sanctioned by IndyCar, currently known as Indy Lights Presented by Cooper Tires for sponsorship reasons. Indy Lights is the highest step on the Road to Indy, a programme of racing series leading up to the IndyCar Series. The Indy Lights series has been promoted by Anderson Promotions since 2014, which also manages the Road to Indy programme.

Stock Car Brasil, also known as Stock Car V8, is a touring car auto racing series based in Brazil. It is considered the major South American motorsports series.

Racing career

Paese competed in his first international auto race in the 1994 EFDA Nations Cup partnered with Tony Kanaan the team competed at Circuit Park Zandvoort. The team finished fifteenth out of eighteen teams. In 1995 Paese finished third in his domestic Formula Chevrolet championship before graduating into the Formula 3 Sudamericana. In a Honda powered Dallara F394 Paese won one race and classified third in the championship.^[1]

The EFDA Nations Cup, was a Country vs Country competition for Formula Opel cars between 1990 and 1998. It had always been Dan Partel's dream to stage a race that pitted drivers in equal cars racing for their country. The Formula Opel/Vauxhall one make racing series offered the best opportunity for such an event.

Antoine Rizkallah Kanaan "Tony" Filho, more commonly known as Tony Kanaan, is a Brazilian racing driver.

Formula 3 Sudamericana was a South American Formula Three championship. It was inaugurated in 1987 and primarily held races in Brazil and Argentina, with a small number of events held in other countries across the continent. Its most notable graduates include former Formula One drivers Nelson Piquet, Jr., Ricardo Zonta and Christian Fittipaldi, three-time Indianapolis 500 winner Hélio Castroneves, and Champ Car champion and former F1 driver Cristiano da Matta. The series was replaced for 2014 by the Brazilian Formula Three Championship, which focuses on Brazilian circuits and drivers.

Paese joined Draco Racing for three rounds of the International Formula 3000 championship in 1996. At the Pau Grand Prix the Brazilian qualified 22nd and was the last driver allowed to compete. His debut did not last long as he was the first driver to retire.^[2] After he failed to qualify for the race at Pergusa he returned at the Hockenheimring. After qualifying 21st Paese again was the first driver to retire.^[3]

International Draco Racing was a motorsport team with Brazilian roots based in Italy. It was most well-known for operating in the World Series by Renault, but had also taken part in Formula Opel Lotus, International Formula 3000 and Euro Formula 3000.

The Formula 3000 International Championship was a motor racing series created by the Fédération Internationale de l'Automobile (FIA) in 1985 to become the final preparatory step for drivers hoping to enter the Formula One championship. Formula Two had become too expensive, and was dominated by works-run cars with factory engines; the hope was that Formula 3000 would offer quicker, cheaper, more open racing. The series began as an open specification, then tyres were standardized from 1986 onwards, followed by engines and chassis in 1996. The series ran annually until 2004, and was replaced in 2005 by the GP2 Series.

The Pau Grand Prix is a motor race held in Pau, in the Pyrénées-Atlantiques department of southwestern France. The French Grand Prix was held at Pau in 1930, leading to the annual Pau Grand Prix being inaugurated in 1933. It was not run during World War II.

For 1997 Paese moved into the Indy Lights. Paese missed his debut race at Homestead-Miami Speedway due to an illness but joined the field at Long Beach.^[4] In preparation of his Indy Lights season Paese tested with FRE Racing at Roebling Road Raceway. The Brazilian race car driver scored his best result of the season at the Hutchinson Island Road Race Course in Savannah, Georgia. At the track Paese finished behind Hélio Castroneves. After struggling with technical difficulties Paese qualified eighteenth in the championship. His 1998 season started strong with a pole position at the season opener at Homestead. During the race Paese lost the lead to Naoki Hattori on lap four. On lap 29 Paese attempted to recapture the lead of the race but he crashed in the process.^[5] Paese again qualified on pole position at Milwaukee. During the race the Brazilian lost two places and eventually finished third. At Michigan International Speedway Paese had an impressive run. He qualified nineteenth and eventually finished third. Paese was classified thirteenth in the championship.

Roebling Road Raceway, formerly Savannah International Raceway, is a 2.02-mile (3.25 km) road racing course located just outside Bloomingdale, Georgia. Opened in 1959, Roebling Road is relatively unique amongst racetracks in that it lacks any accommodations for spectators; there are no grandstands, no picnicking areas, nor any other sort of viewing facilities. The track was designed by John Rueter and held its first Sports Car Club of America event June 11–12, 1960. The track was financed by and named after SCCA supporter Robert Roebling, great-grandson of John A. Roebling.

Savannah, Georgia City in Georgia, United States

Savannah is the oldest city in the U.S. state of Georgia and is the county seat of Chatham County. Established in 1733 on the Savannah River, the city of Savannah became the British colonial capital of the Province of Georgia and later the first state capital of Georgia. A strategic port city in the American Revolution and during the American Civil War, Savannah is today an industrial center and an important Atlantic seaport. It is Georgia's fifth-largest city, with a 2017 estimated population of 146,444. The Savannah metropolitan area, Georgia's third largest, had an estimated population of 387,543 in 2017.

After the 1998 season Paese took a sabbatical from professional racing. He returned to full-time racing in the domestic Stock Car Brasil in 2003. The driver from Curitiba scored his best result at Autódromo Internacional Orlando Moura. After being disqualified from qualifying he finished seventh. Paese eventually finished 22nd in the championship.^[6] He returned for one race in 2005. At Autódromo Internacional Nelson Piquet Paese finished sixteenth, just outside the points.^[7]

Autódromo Internacional de Campo Grande is a motorsports circuit located in Campo Grande, Brazil. Till 2011 the circuit was one of the hosts of the South American Formula Three series, namely the Formula 3 Sudamericana.

The Autódromo Internacional Nelson Piquet, also known as Jacarepaguá after the neighbourhood in which it was located, was a motorsport circuit in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. Opened in 1977, it hosted the Formula One Brazilian Grand Prix on ten occasions, and was also used for CART, motorcycle racing and stock car racing. In 2012, it was demolished to make way for facilities to be used in the 2016 Summer Olympics.
