TROMP Percussion Eindhoven is a biennial percussion competition and festival held in Eindhoven, Netherlands since 1971. In 2012, TROMP will be organising its fourth percussion competition (twenty-first competition in total). It is scheduled to take place from 2 till 11 November 2012.

TROMP International Percussion Competition Eindhoven is a biennial international competition founded in 1971. In 2012 TROMP will be organising its fourth percussion competition (21st competition in total).
The competition is organized by a foundation created in memory of its namesake Theo Tromp (1903-1984), a prominent Eindhoven businessman and strong advocate of culture. Through his legacy and the generous support of the city of Eindhoven, the competition has become an event with international allure. Among its laureates are distinguished musicians like percussionists Claire Edwardes (Australia), Yi-Ping Yang (Taiwan) and Alexej Gerassimez (Germany). All prize-winners have proven themselves to be excellent musicians, with budding international careers. Jury-members of the past have included Evelyn Glennie, Colin Currie, Peter Sadlo, Nancy Zeltsman, Emmanuel Séjourné, Bill Cahn, James Wood, Anders Loguin, Andre Pushkarev, Trilok Gurtu and Terry Bozzio.
The central event of TROMP is the international percussion competition. But it also embodies a weeklong percussion Festival with unique concerts and productions.
Since 1971, TROMP has held 20 competitions during which it has had the honour of welcoming many highly talented participants. Prizewinners of the contest include violinist Emmy Verhey (1971), pianist Bart van de Roer (1996), percussionist Claire Edwardes (2000), the Quatuor Amedeo Modigliani (2004), percussionist Yi-Ping Yang (2006), the Heath Quartet (2008), percussionist Alexej Gerassimez (2010) and percussionist Alexandre Esperet (2012). All prizewinners have proven themselves to be excellent musicians with international careers.
Since October 2007, TROMP is a member of the World Federation of International Music Competitions. [1]
All participants will receive board & lodging with host families as well as an reimbursement of their travel costs. TROMP will provide all necessary instruments. Various activities, including masterclasses, will be offered to participants during the competition.
In preparation of the solo-percussion competition, TROMP International Percussion Competition Eindhoven organised masterclasses around the globe. Participants were given the opportunity to study and perform the repertoire for the TROMP Competition with renowned percussionists.
The Repertoire Days took place in Boston - U.S.A. (2nd until 5 March), Shanghai - China (6th until 10 March) and Amsterdam - The Netherlands (15 until 18 March).

An important component of TROMP Percussion Eindhoven is the commissioned composition, written by a prominent composer. During previous editions, composers such as Louis Andriessen (2000), Jacob ter Veldhuis (2006), Steve Martland (2008) and Michael Torke (2010) have created the special TROMP composition. The American composer Nico Muhly will now follow in their footsteps. Nico Muhly was given the task of composing the compulsory work, which will be performed for the first time during the final by the contestants together with Colin Currie and Britten Sinfonia, directed by Bas Wiegers.
A second commission has been given to budding Dutch composer Joey Roukens. He will write the compulsory work for timpani to be performed during the finals.
Nico Muhly - Double Standard
American composer Nico Muhly (1981) is already one of the most popular composers in the world. Premières of his orchestral pieces have already been performed by the Boston Pops Orchestra, the New York Philharmonic and the Chicago Symphony Orchestra. Muhly has also written various film scores, including Joshua (2007) and ‘Best Film’ nominated The Reader (2008). As a performing artist he works as arranger and conductor with numerous other renowned artists, including Philip Glass, Antony and the Johnsons, Björk, Rufus Wainwright, Grizzly Bear and Sufjan Stevens. During season 12/13, Nico Muhly is composer in residence of Muziekgebouw Eindhoven for the fourth consecutive year.
Joey Roukens - Beat Mutations
Rising star Joey Roukens (1982) can easily be described as the forerunner of the next generation of Dutch composers. In recent years he has been commissioned to write pieces by the Koninklijk Concertgebouworkest, Asko|Schönberg, the Storioni Festival and violinist Janine Jansen. Colin Currie performed the première of Roukens’ Percussion Concerto in May 2011. Currie heralded the piece as ‘one of the five best concertos ever written’.

He has established an international profile and receives regular commissions from organisations in New Zealand and overseas.
David Sartor is an American composer, conductor, and educator, and is the founder and music director of the Parthenon Chamber Orchestra.
Sarah Frances Beamish is a British composer and violist. Her works include chamber, vocal, choral and orchestral music. She has also worked in the field of music, theatre, film and television, as well as composing for children and for her local community.
Zyklus für einen Schlagzeuger is a composition by Karlheinz Stockhausen, assigned Number 9 in the composer's catalog of works. It was composed in 1959 at the request of Wolfgang Steinecke as a test piece for a percussion competition at the Darmstadt Summer Courses, where it was premièred on 25 August 1959 by Christoph Caskel. It quickly became the most frequently played solo percussion work, and "inspired a wave of writing for percussion".
International Marimba Soloist, Bogdan Băcanu became a professor for marimba at the famous Anton Bruckner Private University in Linz (Austria) at just 23 years old of age.

Simon Steen-Andersen is a Danish composer, performer, director and media artist.
Emmanuel Séjourné is a French composer and percussionist, and head of percussion at the Conservatoire de Strasbourg. His music is influenced by Western classical music and by popular music.
Alejandro Coello Calvo is a Spanish percussionist, composer and producer. At only 23 years old, he became percussion solo teacher (Lehrbeauftragter) at the University of Music Franz Liszt in Weimar, Weimar. From 2017 to 2018 he gave lessons at the Castilla y León Higher Conservatory of Music in Spain.
It Remains to Be Seen is a single-movement composition for orchestra by the American composer Nico Muhly. The work was commissioned by the Boston University Tanglewood Institute for their 40th Anniversary Gala Concert. It was premiered in July 2006 by the BUTI orchestra under the conductor James Gaffigan.
Andy Akiho is an American musician and composer of contemporary classical music. A virtuoso percussionist based in New York City, his primary performance instrument is steel pans. He took interest in becoming a percussionist when his older sister introduced him to a drum set at the age of 9. Akiho first tried his hand at the steel pan when he became an undergraduate at the University of South Carolina. He began taking several trips to Trinidad after college to learn and play music. From there, he started writing pieces of his own.

The Symphony No. 1, Op. 24, is an orchestral composition by the Finnish composer Aulis Sallinen, who began writing the piece in 1970 when the City of Helsinki announced a composers' competition to mark the inauguration of Finlandia Hall. Completing the symphony in 1971, Sallinen was awarded First Prize in the contest; the Helsinki Philharmonic Orchestra and its music director, Jorma Panula, premiered the work at Finlandia Hall during the 2 December inaugural festivities.
Claire Olivia Edwardes is an Australian classical percussionist, artistic director, composer and advocate for change in the classical music sector. Edwardes is the co-founder and artistic director of Ensemble Offspring, roles she shared with composer Damien Ricketson until his retirement from the group in 2015. In 2016, she won two APRA Art Music Awards, with one going to Ensemble Offspring for "sustained services to Australian music for 20 years", and Edwardes receiving an individual award "for performance, advocacy and artistic leadership”. She is the only Australian to have won the Luminary Art Music Award for an Individual 3 times. In 2019, Edwardes created and performed the music and dance theatre work RECITAL with dancer Richard Cilli and director Gideon Obarzanek for Dance Massive 2019. Edwardes composed the music and sound design for RECITAL in collaboration with Paul Mac. In 2011 and 2017, Edwardes was a member of the Australian World Orchestra. In 2015-216, Edwardes was the Vice President of the New Music Network. Edwardes has appeared on television as an occasional host of Play School, and as a panelist on Spicks and Specks. In 2021, Edwardes created The Australian Marimba Composition Kit and a comprehensive list of percussion works by female composers. Additionally, Edwardes has composed numerous works for solo waterphone. She is currently on staff as a percussion teacher at the Sydney Conservatorium of Music.
Jordan Ashman is a British multi-percussionist born in 2004 in Bury St Edmunds, and is the winner of the BBC Young Musician of the Year award in 2022.
Alexej Gerassimez is a German solo percussion player and composer.
Emil Kuyumcuyan is a percussionist, composer, electronic musician, and professor from Istanbul. His work is influenced by a blend of contemporary classical, jazz and Anatolian music, resulting in a unique performing style. Emil has received recognition for his inventive approach to music and ability to integrate numerous genres and influences as a drummer, composer, and electronic artist.
