Taha Baban is a Kurdish writer and artist.
He was born in Suleymania, Iraq and has written a number of books demonstrating the crimes of the former regime led by Saddam Hussein. [1] Taha Baban initiated the annual Baban Golden Prize in 1970, which is awarded to actors considered to have given the best performance of the year.
Ahmad Mukhtar Baban was Prime Minister of Iraq under the Kingdom of Iraq in 1958, and the first Kurd to hold the position.
Baban was a Kurdish principality existing from the 16th century to 1850, centered around Sulaymaniyah. The Baban principality played an active role in the Ottoman-Safavid conflict and gave significant military support to the Ottomans. They were in constant rivalry with Ardalan, Bohtan and Soran and its territory would therefore oscillate. Before the removal of the last Baban leader in 1850, their rule had become limited to their capital Sulaymaniyah and few surrounding villages.
