Take Stock in Children Inc. (TSIC) is a nonprofit organization founded by Don Pemberton in 1995 and based in Fort Lauderdale, Florida. The organization aims to provide mentors and college scholarships to low-income students in Florida, in order to help students graduate and successfully enter a career. [1] Since its inception, over 24,000 children have been enrolled in the Take Stock in Children program, which is active in over 800 Florida schools. [2] [3]
In 1993, Don Pemberton founded the Take Stock in Children organization, to provide scholarships and mentors to at-risk students. In 1999, the program had its first graduating class. [2] In 2010, the organization was awarded funds of around $5 million from the U.S. Department of Education's Investing in Innovation (i3) grant program. [2] [4] In 2013, Ted Carter was elected the chairman of the organization. [2] In 2017, the program's division in Manatee County, Florida, collected used laptops to provide to the students enrolled in the program, with Cheryl Evans, TSIC's program coordinator for Manatee County, having stated "we were shocked to learn that many of our scholars are completing their homework assignments and even writing college essays on their cell phones". [5] In 2009, Brothers Nick and Nathan Gupta raised money to buy brand new laptops for the recipients of the TSIC scholarship. This program, based in Santa Rosa and Escambia Counties has raised over $200,000 and a record $90,000 in the past three years.
The organization offers volunteer mentors, college success coaches, and, ultimately, college scholarship to low-income students in Florida. Once in the eighth grade, students can apply for the program and have to meet income eligibility requirements while maintaining satisfactory grades in school. Children in the program are paired with adult volunteer mentors, who meet with their students at their respective schools for half an hour each week, and are trained, monitored, and evaluated by the TSIC program. [1] [6] [7] Each student is also assigned a student advocate, who provides assistance and works closely with mentors and school staff. The TSIC program also provides college transition and college retention services for students' freshman year of college. [1]
The organization has reported that 96% of students enrolled in the TSIC program graduate high school on time, and that 70% of TSIC students complete college, in comparison to the Florida state average of 25% for students in poverty. [8] [9]

New College of Florida is a public liberal arts college in Sarasota, Florida. The college is a member of the Council of Public Liberal Arts Colleges. In 2023, the state government of Florida overhauled its board of trustees in an attempt to transform the honors college into a conservative institution modeled on the private, conservative, and Christian Hillsdale College. Since then, nearly 40% of faculty have resigned. New College has the smallest student enrollment in the State University System of Florida with 689 students as of 2022.

The D.C. Opportunity Scholarship Program provides scholarships to low-income children in Washington D.C. for tuition and other fees at participating private schools. The program was the first Federally funded school voucher program in the United States. It was first approved in 2003 and allowed to expire for the first time in 2009 under the Obama administration. The program was reauthorized under the SOAR Act in 2011, but again defunded at the end of the second Obama presidency. The program was reinstated under President Trump.

Step Up for Students is a 501(c)3 nonprofit in Florida providing low income students, bullied students and students with special needs with scholarships to help pay tuition for private school, assistance to attend an out of district public school, or for tutoring, textbooks or therapies. Step Up For Students was created as part of a merger between Florida's two largest scholarship organizations Florida P.R.I.D.E and Children First, which was founded by Tampa Bay businessman John Kirtley. Kirtley had founded a previous scholarship organization, Children's Scholarship Fund of Tampa Bay in 1998 and received more than 15,000 applications for 750 available scholarships. The large demand led Kirtley to help push for the creation of the Florida Tax Credit Scholarship, which was signed into law in 2001. That scholarship program allows donors to receive dollar for dollar tax credits for contributions to nonprofits offering scholarships to low-income students in Florida. The scholarship was capped at $50 million for the 2002-03 school year and scholarships were awarded to 15,585 students.
The Jack Kent Cooke Foundation is a private, independent foundation which provides scholarship programs to gifted students in the U.S. who have financial need. It offers academic advising and other support services to students from 8th grade to graduate school. Since 2000, it has awarded over $175 million in scholarships to nearly 2,300 students and more than $97 million in grants to organizations that serve gifted low-income students.
We Need Diverse Books (WNDB) is a nonprofit organization created to promote diversity of multiple forms in American children's literature and publishing, which grew out of the Twitter hashtag #WeNeedDiverseBooks in 2014. Based in Largo in Pinellas County, Florida, the foundation's primary aims are to improve educational opportunities in Pinellas County schools and improve the quality of public education. The foundation has raised over $140 million to support students and teachers in Pinellas County.
