Tamara Toles O'Laughlin is an environmental activist, climate strategist, CEO and president of the Environmental Grant makers Association (EGA). [1]

Early life and education

Toles is from Brooklyn, New York. [2] She is an environmental activist focused on people, the planet and it resources. [3]

Toles was an undergraduate student at the City University of New York, where she majored in political science. She earned a Juris Doctor [4] from Vermont Law School and a Masters Degree in Environmental Law and Policy. [5]

Career

As a City College student, she interned at the Advisory Council on Historic Preservation and the Environmental Protection Agency. During graduate school at Vermont Law School she interned at the Center on Race, Poverty and Environment, and fulfilled a summer law fellowship at the Natural Resources Defense Council. [6]

After school, Toles worked for the Maryland Energy Administration and District Department of Energy and Environment in Washington, DC. She served as the Senior Law Clerk to the Honorable Douglas A. Brady, and the Senior Sitting Judge Julio A. Brady at the Superior Court of the US Virgin Islands on St. Croix. [7]

In 2014, Toles was appointed to the Executive Board of EcoWomen. [8] [9] During her tenure, she held several positions, including Vice President of Professional Development, during which she produced the organization's signature salon and monthly educational forum, EcoHour. She closed her term as the Board Chair during the final two years. [7]

She served on the board of the Maryland Climate Coalition. [10]

In February 2017, [11] Toles was appointed as Executive Director of the Maryland Environmental Health Network, where she worked to eliminate environmental threats to human health. [12] She created the Baltimore City Climate Resolution, which upholds the Paris Agreement and calls for 100% renewable energy use in Baltimore by 2050. [13] [14] It encourages the development of wind technology and disincentivizes incineration. [13] The resolution was passed in June 2017. [13] In 2018, she was awarded the Vermont Law School Social Justice Scholars Alumni Award. [12] She also co-founded the Healthy Green Maryland Amendment Initiative to define healthy communities and provide multi-generational protections to defend against disproportionate climate impacts in the Maryland constitution. [15]

In 2019, Toles joined 350.org as its North America Director, making her the first African-American woman to hold this position in an environment or climate organization. [16]

In 2021, Toles joined the EGA as its CEO and President. [17] That same year Toles launched Climate Critical, a global support intervention for workers in environment and climate. [7] [18]

Toles has written for Rolling Stone , [19] The Nation, [20] Yes! magazine [21] and Grist. [22] She is a contributor to Politico‘s Long Game Forum [23] on issues [24] of environment, equity, energy access and climate justice. [25]

The Center for International Environmental Law (CIEL) is a public nonprofit environmental law organization based in Washington, DC, with an office in Geneva, Switzerland. It was founded in 1989. CIEL's team aims to use "the power of law to protect the environment, promote human rights, and ensure a just and sustainable society. CIEL seeks a world where the law reflects the interconnection between humans and the environment, respects the limits of the planet, protects the dignity and equality of each person, and encourages all of earth’s inhabitants to live in balance with each other." They help educate organizations, corporations, and the public on environmental issues and conduct their own research. Carroll Muffett has been the president and CEO of CIEL since September 2010. CIEL also offer legal internship programs.

The Environmental Commissioner of Ontario was a non-partisan officer of the Legislative Assembly of Ontario charged with upholding the province's Environmental Bill of Rights (EBR). The Commissioner did not report to any ministry, but rather to the Legislature itself, and was selected via recommendation by an all-party committee chaired by the Speaker of the Legislative Assembly. The candidate was then appointed by unanimous vote of the Legislative Assembly of Ontario.

Specifically, but not exclusively, this includes jobs that help to protect ecosystems and biodiversity; reduce energy, materials, and water consumption through high efficiency strategies; de-carbonize the economy; and minimize or altogether avoid generation of all forms of waste and pollution." The environmental sector has the dual benefit of mitigating environmental challenges as well as helping economic growth.

Power Shift Network is a North American non-profit organization made up of a network of youth-led social and environmental justice organizations working together to build the youth clean energy and climate movement. It runs campaigns in the United States and Canada to build grassroots power and advocate for tangible changes on climate change and social justice at local, state, national and international levels in North America. The organization changed its name from Energy Action Coalition in July 2016 in order to reflect its new leadership and it shift from a coalition to a network structure. The Power Shift Network's members, which include other non-profit organizations and student groups focused on environmental justice, social justice, and climate change, focus their organizing and campaigns on campuses, communities, corporate practices, and politics. The Power Shift Network is part of the Global Youth Climate Movement.

Eco-investing or green investing is a form of socially responsible investing where investments are made in companies that support or provide environmentally friendly products and practices. These companies encourage new technologies that support the transition from carbon dependence to more sustainable alternatives. Green finance is "any structured financial activity that’s been created to ensure a better environmental outcome."

The Breakthrough Institute is an environmental research center located in Berkeley, California. Founded in 2007 by Michael Shellenberger and Ted Nordhaus, The institute is aligned with ecomodernist philosophy. The Institute advocates for an embrace of modernization and technological development in order to address environmental challenges. Proposing urbanization, agricultural intensification, nuclear power, aquaculture, and desalination as processes with a potential to reduce human demands on the environment, allowing more room for non-human species.

Melanie Harrison Okoro is an American marine estuarine and environmental scientist. She is the founder, CEO, and principal of Eco-Alpha Environmental & Engineering Services. Okoro focuses on environmental aquatic biogeochemistry, professional natural resource management, and STEM diversity initiatives. She is the first African-American women early-career scientist to serve on the Council of the American Geophysical Union (AGU).
