Fencing is a combat sport that features sword fighting. The three disciplines of modern fencing are the foil, the épée, and the sabre ; each discipline uses a different kind of blade, which shares the same name, and employs its own rules. Most competitive fencers specialize in one discipline. The modern sport gained prominence near the end of the 19th century and is based on the traditional skill set of swordsmanship. The Italian school altered the historical European martial art of classical fencing, and the French school later refined that system. Scoring points in a fencing competition is done by making contact with an opponent.

Soren Hunter Miles Sussman Thompson is an American épée fencer, team world champion, and two-time Olympian. He represented the United States in the 2004 Olympics in Athens, where he reached the quarterfinals and came in 7th, the best US result in the event since 1956 and at the time the second-best US result of all-time. He also represented the US in the 2012 Olympics in London. Thompson won a gold medal and world championship in the team épée event at the 2012 World Fencing Championships. He was inducted into the USA Fencing Hall of Fame in 2018, and the Southern California Jewish Sports Hall of Fame in 2020.
Vadym Gutzeit is a Ukrainian Olympic champion sabre fencer, and current Ukraine's Youth and Sport Minister, as well as the president of the National Fencing Federation of Ukraine.
Timothy Frank Morehouse is an American fencer who won a Silver Medal competing in the men's sabre as a member of the United States fencing team at the 2008 Summer Olympics in Beijing. Morehouse is coached by Yury Gelman. He is the founder of the Fencing in the Schools program.
Maher "Mauro" Hamza is a fencing coach who was born in Cairo, Egypt. In 1994, Hamza coached at Texas A&M for one year. In August 1999, he established Salle Mauro in Houston, Texas. Hamza also served as Fencing Program Coordinator at Rice University from 1998 to 2014. He spent three years serving the Southwest fencing community as volunteer Chairman of the Gulf Coast Division.
Osman Abdel Hafeez was an Egyptian épée and foil fencer. He competed at the 1948 and 1952 Summer Olympics. He was one of six members of the Egyptian fencing team who perished on board KLM Flight 607-E on 14 August 1958.
Fencing competitions at the 2010 Summer Youth Olympics in Singapore consisted of three Cadet Male individual events, three Cadet Female individual events and one team event including both genders and all 3 weapons: épée, foil and saber. 78 fencers from 36 nations were competing. The venue was located at the International Convention Centre (ICC).
Andrea Cassarà is an Italian left-handed foil fencer, two-time individual European champion, 2011 individual world champion, and three-time Olympics medalist.
Richard Kruse is a former British right-handed foil fencer and four-time Olympian. In 2015, he was part of the Great Britain team that shocked Olympic champions Italy to win the first European Games gold in team foil, the first British gold medal in a team fencing event at World or European level for fifty years. He retired in 2021.
Nicole Ross is an American foil fencer. Fencing for the Columbia Lions fencing team, she won the 2010 NCAA individual women's foil title, and was a three time All-American. At the 2012 Summer Olympics she competed in individual women's foil, coming in 25th, while in the team event she and her teammates came in sixth. At the 2018 World Championships, she and her Team USA teammates won the gold medal in the women's team foil event.
Alaaeldin Mohamed El-Sayed Abouelkassem is an Egyptian fencer who won a silver medal in the men's foil event at the 2012 Summer Olympics. He took up fencing at the age of eight and, in 2008, began fencing internationally, winning medals at the African and World Junior Championships, as well as the Junior World Cup, before progressing to the senior level in 2011 and capturing bronze at the Fleuret de St-Petersbourg. Later that year, he earned gold medals at the 2011 Pan Arab Games in the individual and team foil events before progressing to the 2012 Summer Games, where he won Africa's first-ever Olympic fencing medal.
Kenta Chida is a Japanese fencer. At the 2012 Summer Olympics he competed in the men's foil, but was defeated in the second round. He won a silver medal in the team foil event.

May Lee Tieu is a Chinese-American olympic fencer. She participated at the 2018 Summer Youth Olympics in the fencing competition, being awarded the bronze medal in the girls' foil event. At the 2021 World Cadets and Juniors Fencing Championships she won the gold medal in the individual foil, and bronze in the team foil. In 2019 she received the Jack Kelly Fair Play Award. As of April 2023, she has retired from competitive fencing.
