Tampa-Fort Brooke was a single census area in Hillsborough County, Florida, recorded by the United States Census Bureau during the 1850 federal census with the name Tampa, including Fort Brook[e]. [1] The population was 974, [1] which was the fifth largest enumerated settlement in Florida [1] .
The census area was designated to include the village of Tampa and Fort Brooke military reservation, which were separate entities. Tampa, itself, wasn't returned separately by enumerators until 1870 when the town recorded a population of 796. [2] Fort Brooke wasn't returned separately until 1890, when the town recorded a population of 448. [3] Fort Brooke was annexed into Tampa in 1907. [4]
The racial makeup of the area in 1850 were 64.8% (631) Whites and 35.2% (343) African Americans, in which 98.0% (336) were slaves and only 2.0% (7) were free. [5] For every 100 females, there were 170.5 males (614 males and 360 females). [5]

The census area includes the unincorporated communities of Carrollwood and Carrollwood Village. For the 2000 census the area was enumerated under the name "Greater Carrollwood" and had a population of 33,519. A similar area was listed as "Lake Carroll" in 1970 and 1980; for the 1990 census it was split into the smaller Carrollwood and Carrollwood Village CDPs.

Fort Brooke was a historical military post situated on the east bank of the Hillsborough River in present-day Tampa, Florida. The fort was established in 1824, soon after Florida was acquired by the United States from Spain. It was an important post during the Seminole Wars and of lesser importance during the United States Civil War. It was decommissioned in 1883, and the land was eventually sold to private interests.

The United States census of 1870 was the ninth United States census. It was conducted by the Census Bureau from June 1, 1870 to August 23, 1871. The 1870 census was the first census to provide detailed information on the African-American population, only five years after the culmination of the Civil War when slaves were granted freedom. The total population was 38,925,598 with a resident population of 38,558,371 individuals, a 22.6% increase from 1860. The 1870 census' population estimate was controversial, as many believed it underestimated the true population numbers, especially in New York and Pennsylvania.
