The Tampa Spartans Baseball program represents the University of Tampa in the NCAA's Division II Level in the Sunshine State Conference. The Spartans are one of the most successful baseball programs in the history of Division II with nine national titles. Their most recent came in 2024. Tampa is tied with Florida Southern for the most national titles among DII baseball programs. The Spartans are coached by Joe Urso, considered to be the greatest Division II baseball head coach ever and one of the best college baseball coaches of all-time. [5]
Tampa has reached the College World Series 22 times, reaching the finals 11 times. The Spartans have won 23 Sunshine State Conference titles, including 18 since 2000, and have produced 101 Major League Baseball draft picks. [6] Nine of those players have gone on to play in the big leagues, including Tino Martinez, Ozzie Timmons and Lou Pinella. The program has highly-publicized wins against Philadelphia Phillies in an exhibition game back in 2015 [7] and the Netherlands national baseball team ahead of the 2006 World Baseball Classic. [8]
The Spartans have spent 399 weeks ranked in the top 25, including 298 consecutive weeks from 2005-present. Of those 399 weeks, 119 have been spent as the No. 1 team in all of Division II and 353 weeks have been spent inside the top 10. [9]

Louis Victor Piniella is a former professional baseball player and manager. An outfielder, he played 18 seasons in Major League Baseball (MLB) with the Baltimore Orioles, Cleveland Indians, Kansas City Royals and New York Yankees. During his playing career, he was named AL Rookie of the Year in 1969 and captured two World Series championships with the Yankees.
Constantino "Tino" Martinez is an American former professional baseball player. He played in Major League Baseball (MLB) for the Seattle Mariners, New York Yankees, St. Louis Cardinals, and Tampa Bay Devil Rays from 1990 through 2005. He also served as a hitting coach for the Miami Marlins in 2013. He was also nicknamed "The Bam-tino" after his home run in Game 1 of the 1998 World Series. Formerly a third baseman, Martinez was the first round draft pick for the Seattle Mariners in 1988 out of the University of Tampa, where he starred during his time on campus. During his 16-year MLB career, he scored 1,009 runs, drove in 1,271 runs, and hit 339 home runs. He had 100 or more RBI in six different seasons and was twice named to the All-Star team.
The University of Tampa (UTampa) is a private university in Tampa, Florida. It is accredited by the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools. UT offers more than 200 programs of study, including 19 master's degrees and a broad variety of majors, minors, pre-professional programs and certificates.
Jason Renyt Tyner is a former Major League Baseball outfielder. His MLB career spanned nine seasons from 2000 through 2008 for the New York Mets (2000), Tampa Bay Devil Rays (2000-2003), Minnesota Twins (2005-2007), and Cleveland Indians (2008). He bats and throws left-handed and played all three outfield spots, with the majority of his playing time coming in left field.
Jesuit High School is a private, Catholic, all-male high school run by the U.S. Central and Southern Province of the Society of Jesus in Tampa, Florida. The school was established in 1899 by the Jesuits and operates independently of the Roman Catholic Diocese of Saint Petersburg. The school teaches a college preparatory curriculum and has been named a Blue Ribbon School of Excellence.
Osborne Llewellyn Timmons, is an American former professional baseball outfielder and coach. He played in Major League Baseball (MLB) from 1995 through 2000 for the Chicago Cubs, Cincinnati Reds, Seattle Mariners, and Tampa Bay Devil Rays. He also played in Nippon Professional Baseball in 2001 for the Chunichi Dragons.
The Wright State Raiders are the athletics teams of Wright State University in Fairborn, Ohio. The school currently participates in ten sports at the Division I level of the NCAA and are members of the Horizon League. The school's mascot is a wolf.
Christian Michael Prieto is a former professional baseball player and coach who played one season in Major League Baseball for the Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim in 2005. Prieto attended Carmel High School, and the University of Nevada.
The Tampa Spartans are the athletic teams that represent the University of Tampa, located in Tampa, Florida, in NCAA Division II intercollegiate sports. The Spartans compete as members of the Sunshine State Conference for all sports besides beach volleyball and track and field, which compete as independents. Tampa has been a member of the conference since 1981.
The Tampa Bay area is home to many sports teams and has a substantial history of sporting activity. Most of the region's professional sports franchises use the name "Tampa Bay", which is the name of a body of water, not of any city. This is to emphasize that they represent the wider metropolitan area and not a particular municipality and was a tradition started by Tampa's first major sports team, the original Tampa Bay Rowdies, when they were founded in 1975.
The James Madison Dukes baseball team represents James Madison University in NCAA baseball. The "Diamond Dukes," as the team is known, have compiled a 1092-670-8 all-time record and have made the NCAA tournament eight times, most recently in 2024. The Dukes compete in the Sun Belt Conference.
Josue Espada is a Puerto Rican professional baseball coach and former Minor League Baseball player. He is the manager of the Houston Astros of Major League Baseball (MLB). He previously coached in MLB for the Miami Marlins, New York Yankees, and the Astros. In international competition, Espada has coached for Puerto Rico, winning two silver medals in the World Baseball Classic (WBC).
The Tampa Spartans football program was an intercollegiate American football team for the University of Tampa (UT) located in Tampa, Florida, that began play in 1933. The program competed against other small college programs in the forerunner of today's NCAA Division II for almost forty years before moving to the top level of NCAA Division I as an independent in 1971. Successfully competing against top college programs as a much smaller school put an enormous strain on the university's finances, and the school decided to discontinue football after the 1974 season.
The Shepherd Rams are the athletic teams that represent Shepherd University, located in Shepherdstown, West Virginia, in Division II intercollegiate sports of the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA). The Rams compete as members of the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) for all 15 varsity sports since the 2019–20 academic year. They previously competed in the Mountain East Conference (MEC) from 2013–14 to 2018–19, and before that, the now-defunct West Virginia Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (WVIAC) from 1924–25 to 2012–13.

The Michigan State Spartans baseball team is the varsity intercollegiate baseball team of Michigan State University in East Lansing, Michigan, United States. The team competes in the National Collegiate Athletic Association's Division I and are members of the Big Ten Conference.
Joseph Patrick Wendle is an American professional baseball infielder who is a free agent. He has previously played in Major League Baseball (MLB) for the Oakland Athletics, Tampa Bay Rays, Miami Marlins, and New York Mets. He is one of the few MLB players to not use batting gloves.
The South Florida Bulls baseball team is the intercollegiate men's baseball program representing the University of South Florida in Tampa, Florida. The team competes in the American Athletic Conference of NCAA Division I. Founded in 1966, the baseball team is one of the oldest teams at the university. The Bulls have captured eleven conference titles and 14 NCAA tournament appearances. The team plays their home games on campus at USF Baseball Stadium at Red McEwen Field and are coached by Mitch Hannahs.
The 2019 NCAA Division II baseball tournament decided the champion of baseball at the NCAA Division II level for the 2019 season. the Tampa Spartans won their eighth national championship in program history by defeating the Colorado Mesa Mavericks, who were playing in their second national championship. Head Coach Joe Urso won his fifth national championship in his tenure at Tampa. This tournament also introduced a super regional round to the tournament as the eight regionals were instead split into sixteen. Following which, the regional champions would face off in a best-of-three super regional, the winners of the super regionals would then advance to the College World Series.
The 2015 NCAA Division II baseball Tournament decided the baseball champion at the NCAA Division II level for the 2015 season. The Tampa Spartans won their seventh national championship, beating the Indians of Catawba College in the national championship. Tampa catcher Nick Tindall was named tournament Most Outstanding Player, while Tampa head coach Joe Urso won his fourth championship with the Spartans.
