Tamr is a provider of AI-native master data management (MDM) software founded by Michael Stonebraker.[1] The company was founded in 2013 and is headquartered in Cambridge, Massachusetts.[2] Tamr was co-founded by Mike Stonebraker, Andy Palmer, and Ihab Ilyas. Its approach builds on research from MIT's Computer Science and Artificial Intelligence Laboratory (CSAIL).[3] Anthony Deighton has been described as Tamr's chief executive officer in interviews and trade press coverage.[4][5]
Tamr's platform focuses on creating and maintaining “golden records” by accelerating discovery, enrichment and ongoing curation as part of an AI-native MDM approach.[6] The company positions this as distinct from traditional rules-based MDM, combining machine learning with human oversight.[7] Deighton has said that human refinement remains important for achieving high accuracy and reliability in AI-powered data mastering.[8][9]
In 2023, Tamr announced Tamr Smart Curation as a Snowflake Native App available via Snowflake Marketplace, with the announcement made at Snowflake Summit 2023.[10] The Smart Curation app is described as providing automatic monitoring of data product quality with generative-AI-based detection and collaborative feedback within Snowflake.[11]
Tamr later introduced Tamr RealTime, described as a set of features for its AI-native MDM platform that enable real-time interactions along with AI-based improvements to data accuracy and adaptability.[12] Reporting on the launch also notes Tamr's portfolio of patents in AI, machine learning and data curation.[13]
Origins
According to an interview with Deighton, Tamr's development grew out of academic work at MIT on entity resolution under the leadership of Stonebraker, with an emphasis on applying machine learning to link records across large numbers of sources.[14]
Research
In 2023, Tamr publicised research indicating that 78% of surveyed businesses were focused on improving customer data quality and breaking down data silos, and that organizations were seeking to derive more value from customer data.[15][16] The announcement stated that the study was conducted by Propeller Insights and surveyed over 500 participants across multiple industries.[17]
Recognition
Tamr was included in The Software Report list of “The Top 25 Data Management and Analytics Companies of 2025.”[18]
