Tangalle National Boys' School was established in 1879 and is the oldest Christian missionary school in the Hambantota District. [1] The school, which opened on 31 October 1879, [2] was originally called Christ Church College. The first principal and administrator of the college was Rev. Father C. A. W. Jayasekara. [3] Initially it was a boys college but later became a mixed school. In 1962 the school was taken over by the government and the name was changed to Tangalle Maha Vidyalaya. [1] In 1994 it was renamed to Tangalle National Boys' School. The current principal is N. G. Gaminidasa.

Don Peter Atapattu, popularly known as D. P. Atapattu, was a Member of Parliament in Sri Lanka. Born at Nakulugamuwa Walauwa, Nakulugamuwa, Sri Lanka, he received his secondary education at St Thomas' College, Mt. Lavinia and Ananda College, Colombo. After graduating from Colombo Law College, he began a law practice in Tangalle. He represented the United National Party from the Beliatta electorate in Hambantota district at six general parliamentary elections held between 1947 and 1965. He won in March 1960 and 1965, while his long-standing rival, D. A. Rajapaksa, won in 1947, 1952, 1956, and July 1960. In the 1965 Dudley Senanayake government, Atapattu was Parliamentary Secretary to the Cabinet Minister of State, J. R. Jayewardene. He died at his home in Tangalle on 14 December 1976. His son, Ranjit Atapattu, was Minister of Health from 1977 until 1989, and his grandson, Druvindra Atapattu, contested the 2009 General Election.

2011 South Asian Beach Games

The 1st South Asian Beach Games was held in Hambantota, Sri Lanka between 8 and 14 October 2011. The opening ceremony was held at the Hambantota Beach Stadium, located in Hambantota district. 359 athletes from eight South Asian nations were competed.

Tangalle electoral district was an electoral district of Sri Lanka between July 1977 and February 1989. The district was named after the town of Tangalle in Hambantota District, Southern Province. The existing 160 mainly single-member electoral districts were replaced with 22 multi-member electoral districts.
