Tantor Media is an imprint of RBMedia, its parent company. It produces unabridged fiction and nonfiction audiobooks. It is in Old Saybrook, Connecticut. Tantor Audio include notable titles, such as National Book Award, Man Booker Prize, and Pulitzer Prize winners and numerous New York Times Best Sellers. [2] Tantor offers its audiobook titles as both physical discs and as downloads for the retail and library markets; [3] Tantor's print and ebook line launched in 2012. [4] In January 2015, Tantor was sold to Recorded Books but would continue to operate with its own imprint and offices. In 2017, Recorded Books re-organized into RBMedia and Tantor operated as an imprint of RBMedia.

History

2000: Tantor Media was founded by brothers Kevin and Allen Colebank and Kevin’s wife, Laura, above a San Clemente, California garage. Tantor is Tarzan's elephant friend in Edgar Rice Burroughs' book Tarzan of the Apes , the first audiobook the company published. [5]

2003: Tantor begins to license exclusive rights from publishers.

2004: Tantor relocates to Old Saybrook, Connecticut.

2007: Tantor experiences a sales growth of 628% since 2005 and its staff expands from 15 to 50 employees. [6]

2008: Tantor introduces their Audio&eBook classics line, which includes an ebook in PDF format with all classic audiobooks. The PDF allows the listener to search the text for reference or read along with the audio. [7]

2009: Tantor Media begins publishing as Tantor Audio.

2010: Tantor Media launches Tantor Studios, which will offer full audio production and distribution services for publishers and authors. [8] [9]

2013:Behind the Candelabra makes the New York Times Best Seller list. [12]

2014: Recorded Books acquires Tantor Media. [13]

Audible is an American online audiobook and podcast service owned by Amazon.com Inc. that allows users to purchase and stream audiobooks and other forms of spoken word content. This content can be purchased individually or under a subscription model where the user receives "credits" that can be redeemed for content monthly and receive access to a curated on-demand library of content. Audible is the United States' largest audiobook producer and retailer.

Rebecca Soler is an American voice actress based in the New York City area. She has voiced on several audiobooks; her most notable voice work has been the narrator for The Lunar Chronicles series by Marissa Meyer. In anime, she voiced title character Miu Nomura in Piano: The Melody of a Young Girl's Heart, Reanne in Ojamajo Doremi and Battia in Outlanders. The Odyssey Award for Excellence in Audiobook Production is an annual award conferred by the American Library Association upon the publisher of "the best audiobook produced for children and/or young adults, available in English in the United States". It is jointly administered by two ALA divisions and sponsored by Booklist magazine. It recognizes production quality in all respects, considering such things as narration, sound quality, background music and sound effects. Ambling Books was a privately held online company that offered free and paid DRM-free audiobooks for download and audio book player software for computers and mobile devices. Ambling was also a distribution channel for audiobook publishers. The company went out of business in February 2016.

RBMedia is an audiobook publishing company with sales globally. It claims to be the largest audiobook publisher in the world. It was founded in 2017 through the acquisitions of independent audiobook companies. The companies, which now operate as imprints of RBMedia, include: Recorded Books, Tantor Media, HighBridge Audio, ChristianAudio, Gildan Media, W.F. Howes, Wavesound, Audiobooks.com, GraphicAudio. It was formed during the ownership by Shamrock Advisors, a private equity firm, and was created by the former publisher Recorded Books. The company is headquartered in Prince Frederick, Maryland near the original Recorded Books operations. It has studios in New York and elsewhere.

Simon Vance British audiobook narrator

Simon Vance is an audiobook narrator and actor who performs contemporary literary works as well as classics, children's books, and nonfiction. He has won 16 Audie Awards since 2002. Specializing in single-voice narration, he was named the American Library Association's Booklist Magazine Voice of Choice in 2008, and has earned AudioFile Magazine's Earphones Award for more than 60 performances since 1998. He has also narrated audiobooks under the names of Richard Matthews and Robert Whitfield. He lives in Los Angeles, California.
