The Tarleton State Texans and TexAnns are the athletic teams that represent Tarleton State University of Stephenville, Texas in NCAA Division II intercollegiate sports. Before Tarleton State became a four-year institution in 1961, they were known as the "Plowboys". The Texans (men's teams) and TexAnns (women's teams) compete as members of the Lone Star Conference for all 12 varsity sports. Tarleton State re-joined the Lone Star Conference in 1995 after having previously participated from 1968 to 1975. They were a founding member of the Texas Intercollegiate Athletic Association (TIAA) in 1976 and remained in that league until 1990. From 1991 to 1994 Tarleton played as an Independent.
Tarleton State University is a public, coeducational, state university located in Stephenville, Texas and is a member of the Texas A&M University System. Located just outside the Dallas/Fort Worth metroplex, Tarleton offers programs including agriculture, nursing, music, medical technology, mathematical data mining, and teacher education programs. The university's public school improvement programs are active in over 50 area school districts. In fall 2012, the university enrolled over 10,000 students for the first time.

Memorial Stadium is a stadium in Stephenville, Texas. It is primarily used for American football, and is the home field of the Tarleton State University Texans football team. It was built in 1977 and seats 7000 people. In 2004, the playing surface was changed from natural grass to synthetic turf. The stadium is also the home of the Stephenville High School Yellow Jackets football team.
Cecil Ballow Baseball Complex is the home to the Tarleton State Texans baseball team in Stephenville, TX. The field is natural grass, and seated capacity is 550. The stadium opened in 1988 just after completion.

The Texas State Bobcats are the sports teams that represent Texas State University. Currently, they compete in the Sun Belt Conference in NCAA Division I. The Bobcat has been the mascot of Texas State University since 1921, when the university adopted the name from the recommendation of a committee formed to raise school spirit. Smaller than mountain lions, bobcats are known for their stubborn fierceness and great courage. The football squad used the bobcat for the first time in 1921 and went undefeated with a 7–0 season. Texas State had several officially recognized live bobcat mascots until the 1970s. In 1964, the Texas State Bobcat was given the official name of "Boko" by Beth Greenlees, a sophomore from Luling, Texas, who beat out about 100 other students in a "Name the Bobcat" contest. Her winning submission earned her a $5 prize and the honor of being the person who named the Texas State mascot. Boko has twice been named “USA National Champion” mascot. Texas State had no official fight song until 1961, when Paul Yoder was commissioned to compose "Go Bobcats." The song is the rousing "call to arms" for all Texas State athletic games and competition.
