Teaching school

The Teaching School as a concept came into being in 2000 when Central Queensland University (in Australia) developed and launched its innovative Bachelor of Learning Management Program (BLM). [1] [2] [3] A core component was the Teaching School which was conceptualised by Professor David Lynch [4] and the first (pilot) 'teaching school' was Kenilworth Community College,onthe Sunshine Coast of Australia, under the leadership of Associate Professor David Turner, then the schools principal. [5] The Teaching School is a parallel to the ‘teaching hospital’ in medicine, where the collective capacities and endeavours of a school (ie K-12) and a university (in this case an education faculty) are harnessed through formal partnership to create a sophisticated and enduring community of practice focused on teacher preparation and teaching improvement (Turner & Lynch, 2006; Lynch, 2012). In the medical model, professors and clinicians work side-by side as the constituents of a multi-dimensional ‘medical’ organisation that is sharply focused on practice excellence, improvement, and research. The same logic applies for the teaching school in that it is a new environment for teachers to be prepared (in-service and pre-service) and education research to be undertaken and disseminated for teacher consumption. With the medical teaching hospital construct in mind, the teaching school then conjures an arrangement where a stratified workforce emerges. Think student teachers, interns, associate teachers, working with registered teachers, professors and the numerous advisors from ‘regional education offices’, in a context of inter-related teaching, learning and research assignments. This stratification also represents a continuum of developing expertise, increased site capacities and staff positioning for effects in the teaching school and in the network of schools (or satellite TSs) that are co-opted for global practice scope, scale and impact. On a parallel plane this stratification represents a significant resource and capacity for rethinking how pupils (K-12) in the school might be taught [6] . [7]

In England, a Teaching school is referred to as an= Ofsted-graded outstanding school that works with other partners to provide high-quality training and development to school staff. They are part of the UK government's plan to give schools in England a central role in raising standards by developing a self-improving and sustainable school-led system. [8]

They were first introduced in England by the coalition government in 2010, in a white paper entitled "The Importance of Teaching". [9] The intention was to replace the university-based teacher training programmes with a workplace-based school-centred and led approach which devolves responsibility for development and management of education to the schools. [9]

Learning Management is the capacity to design pedagogic strategies that achieve learning outcomes for students. The learning management concept was developed by Richard Smith of Central Queensland University (Australia) and is derived from architectural design and is best rendered as design with intent. Learning management then means an emphasis on ‘the design and implementation of pedagogical strategies that achieve learning outcomes. That is, in the balance between and emphasis on curriculum development and pedagogy, the emphasis is definitely on pedagogical strategies. Underpinning the learning management premise is a new set of knowledge and skills, collectively referred to as a futures orientation and which attempts to prepare the mindsets and skillsets of teaching graduates for conditions of social change that pervade local and global societies in the 2000s. The practitioner of learning management is referred to as a learning manager. Adjunct to the theory and practice of learning management is the Learning Management Design Process (LMDP). The LMDP is a curriculum planning process comprising 8 'learning design based' questions. The process was developed by Professor David Lynch of Central Queensland University in 1998 and is used primarily as a tool to train teachers to teach [3]. These 'eight questions' when answered in sequence focus the teacher to what is important when planning to teach students. The LMDP organizes its 8 questions through three sequential phases: Outcomes, Strategy, and Evidence. Each phase represents the bodies of information that its associated questions seek to pursue. The LMDP represents a rethink of the various curriculum development models that have predominated the planning of teaching and curriculum in the developed world over past decades. The teacher develops their 'teaching plan' by engaging with each phase and its questions and recording ‘findings’ in plan form.

Michele Knobel was a Professor of Education in the Department of Teaching and Learning at Montclair State University and an internationally recognized researcher and scholar in the area of literacy education, new literacies and digital technologies.

The 8 Learning Management Questions is a set of questions developed in and primarily used in Australia for teacher training and curriculum development. This sequential design-based set of questions is designed to assist teachers in developing a teaching plan for their classrooms, with a focus on achieving the intended learning outcomes for all students. The process is focused on enabling teachers to translate teaching theory into practice.

Marilyn Leask is an academic and author who researches in education in the UK. She is Professor of Education at De Montfort University, and was previously Professor of Educational Knowledge Management at the University of Bedfordshire and a professor at Brunel University. Many of her works involve the educational use of information and communications technology (ICT).
