History

According to popular sources, Hedrick, a Texas native, [3] graduated from Harvard and began working as a management consultant in Greenwich, Connecticut, where he found it difficult to purchase cowboy boots. [4] He started designing and manufacturing boots in Leon, Mexico, [5] before launching the online retailer in 2015. [6] [7] The company is named for the geological formation Tecovas Creek, allegedly due to the founder's dream of becoming a paleontologist. [8]

In addition to its online sales, the company began opening brick and mortar stores in 2019, [9] with locations across several states. [10] [11] [12] During the COVID-19 pandemic, Tecovas opened seven new physical locations. Sales have grown primarily as a result of digital advertising, [13] with New York and Chicago emerging as two of the company's largest markets. [14]

Sponsorship

Tecovas is the official boot sponsor of the Austin Gamblers; one of 10 bull riding teams of the Professional Bull Riders (PBR) Team Series held every summer through autumn in the United States since 2022. [15] In 2024, Tecovas became the first official boot sponsor of the Stagecoach country music festival. Tecovas is also a sponsor of the Opry NextStage, an 11-month program designed to invest in emerging country music artists. [16]

A spur is a metal tool designed to be worn in pairs on the heels of riding boots for the purpose of directing a horse or other animal to move forward or laterally while riding. Thigh-high boots, known also as thigh-length boots or simply thigh boots, are boots that extend above the knees to at least mid-thigh. Other terms for this footwear include over-the-knee boots, a name originally used for 15th century riding boots for men. These are sometimes called pirate boots, especially when cuffed. Over-the-knee boots are sometimes abbreviated to OTK boots. Lengths vary from reaching just over the knee to reaching almost to the crotch.

Chaps are sturdy coverings for the legs consisting of leggings and a belt. They are buckled on over pants with the chaps' integrated belt, but unlike trousers, they have no seat and are not joined at the crotch. They are designed to provide protection for the legs and are usually made of leather or a leather-like material. Their name is a shortened version of the Spanish word chaparajos. Chaparajos were named after the chaparral, from which they were designed to protect the legs while riding on horseback. Like much of western American horse culture, the origin of chaparajos was in the south of Spain, from which it then passed on to the part of New Spain that later became Mexico, and has been assimilated into cowboy culture of the American West. They are a protective garment to be used when riding a horse through brushy terrain. In the modern world, they are worn for both practical work purposes and for exhibition or show use. Chaps have also been adopted for use on motorcycles, particularly by cruiser-style motorcycle riders.
