The Teifiside LTC Championship [1] [2] was an early late Victorian era men's and women's grass court tennis tournament first staged in 1878 at the Teifiside Lawn Tennis Club, Newcastle Emlyn, Carmarthenshire, Wales. The tournament was held to at least 1892.

History

In the 1800s the Teifiside LTC grass courts were located in the meadows downstream of the River Teifi in Adpar, with a small pavilion and a marquee donated by the Emlyn Arms public house. [3] In 1878 the first club championship was held, won by Henry Gwyn Saunders Davies. [4] In 1879 the men's club championship was won by Mr. G. Lloyd. [5] In 1881 the club championship Teifiside club was won by a Mr. Bowen, he also won the Cardingan club's championship. [6] During this period the club had four grass courts, and two croquet fields, the head groundsman at the time was a Mr. Richards. [7]

In 1889 a meeting held at the Salutation Hotel, Bridge St. Newcastle Emlyn, chaired by Captain Jones-Parry who resigned as club president, and Mr Fitzwilliams was elected. [8] A Major Bate was elected as the new club secretary and treasurer. [9] On 30 August 1892 the club held a tournament that featured a mixed doubles event. [10] In 1908 the earliest records of the existence of a Tivyside Lawn Tennis & Croquet & Bowls Club in Newcastle Emlyn, was listed in the Tivyside Advertiser Newspaper. [11] The Tivyside Lawn Tennis Club shared the Teifiside LTC facilities. [12] The Tivyside Lawn Tennis Club also staged its own tournaments. [13]

In 1936 the King George V Playing Fields association was formed and designated playing field area, it consisted of a bowling green and two new hard courts. An annual subscription fund was formed, and circulated to all clubs wishing to use the new grounds. [14] In 1956 the Teifiside LTC grounds were sold, and the club had no facilities in which to play, however this was resurrected in the early 1960s, with the help of the Young Liberals Club. [15] Unfortunately the club was closed again. In the mid 1980s the Carmarthen Urban District Council bought land in the town next to the King George V sports grounds. [16] In early 1990 a new Newcastle Emlyn & Adpar Community Tennis Club was formed, and two new tarmac courts were laid after receiving grants from the Sports Council for Wales. [17] The tennis club is still operating today. [18]

The 1877 Wimbledon Championship was a men's tennis tournament held at the All England Croquet and Lawn Tennis Club in Wimbledon, London. It was the world's first official lawn tennis tournament, and was later recognised as the first Grand Slam tournament or "Major". The AEC & LTC had been founded in July 1868, as the All England Croquet Club. Lawn tennis was introduced in February 1875 to compensate for the waning interest in croquet. In June 1877 the club decided to organise a tennis tournament to pay for the repair of its pony roller, needed to maintain the lawns. A set of rules was drawn up for the tournament, derived from the first standardised rules of tennis issued by the Marylebone Cricket Club in May 1875.

Charles Gladstone Allen was a British tennis player in the early years of Wimbledon. He was an all comers finalist at 1896 Wimbledon Championships in men's doubles event partnering with his brother Roy Allen, where the lost to Reginald Doherty and Harold Nisbet. He was active from 1887 to 1914 and contested 17 career finals in singles and won 8 titles.

The All Ireland Lawn Tennis Championships. or simply called The Irish Championships was a Victorian period combined men's and women's grass court tennis tournament first staged July 1876. This event was organised by the All Ireland Lawn Tennis Club that was under auspices of the Irish Champion Athletic Club (I.C.A.C.). The tournament was held at Champion Ground, Lansdowne, Dublin, Ireland. The championships ended around 1878.

The Ealing Cricket Club Lawn Tennis Tournament was a combined men's and women's grass court tennis event staged only one time in September 1880. It was held on the grounds of the Ealing Cricket Club (f.1870), Ealing, Middlesex, England.

The Moy and Charlemont LTC Tournament was a Victorian era grass court tennis tournament staged only one time in October 1878. first held at the Moy and Charlemont Croquet and Lawn Tennis Club, Moy, County Tyrone, Northern Ireland.

The Bedford Open also known as the Bedford Lawn Tennis Open Tournament was men's and women's grass court tennis tournament established in 1880 as the Bedfordshire LTC Tournament. It was held at the Bedford Lawn Tennis Club, Bedford, Berkshire, England and ran through until 1974 when it was abolished.

The Shanklin Open was men's and women's grass and hard court tennis tournament established in 1880 as the Shanklin LTC Tournament. It held Shanklin, Isle of Wight, England and ran through until 1939 when it was abolished.

The Tivyside LTC Tournament was a grass court tennis tournament established in 1881 and continued to be held until at least the 1893. The tournament was played at Newcastle Emlyn, Carmarthenshire, Wales.

The County Dublin Championships also known as the County Dublin Open Tennis Championships is a combined men's and women's grass court tennis tournament founded in 1882 as the County Dublin Tournament in Lucan, Dublin for one edition only. In 1887 the tournament was revived at Lansdowne Lawn Tennis Club until 1894 only. In 1908 it was revived for the second time at the Carrickmines Croquet and Lawn Tennis Club, Carrickmines, Republic of Ireland where it is still played today.
