Telephone Shilpa Sangstha or TSS [2] is a government owned telecoms company in Bangladesh. [3] It launched the first laptop made/assembled in Bangladesh, Doel, in 2011. [4] [5] It also manufactures analogue phones, [6] smartphones, and regular cell phones in Bangladesh. [7]
In fiscal 2016-17 the TSS assembled 63,245 laptops and managed to sell 58,750 units.
In fiscal 2016-17, 4,495 units were sold; in fiscal 2014-15, it was 4,550 units.
It started off with a laptop retailing at Tk 10,000, which Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina unveiled on 11 October 2011. [8]
The liberalisation of Bangladesh's telecommunications sector began with small steps in 1989 with the issuance of a licence to a private operator for the provision of inter alia cellular mobile services to compete with Bangladesh Telegraph and Telephone Board (BTTB), the previous monopoly provider of telecommunications services within Bangladesh. Significant changes in the number of fixed and mobile services deployed in Bangladesh occurred in the late 1990s and the number of services in operation have subsequently grown exponentially in the past five years.
Biman Bangladesh Airlines commonly known as Biman, pronounced, is the national flag carrier of Bangladesh. With its main hub at Hazrat Shahjalal International Airport in Dhaka, the airline also operates flights from its secondary hubs at Shah Amanat International Airport in Chittagong and as well as Osmani International Airport in Sylhet. The airline provides international passenger and cargo services to multiple destinations and has air service agreements in 42 countries. The headquarters of the airline, Balaka Bhaban, is located in Kurmitola, in the northern part of Dhaka. Annual Hajj flights; transporting tourists, migrants and non-resident Bangladeshi workers; and the activities of its subsidiaries form an integral part of the corporate business of the airline. Bangladesh's air transport sector, which is experiencing an 8% annual growth rate thanks to a large number of outbound tourists, domestic tourists and non-resident Bangladeshi travellers, is very competitive with stiff competition among a number of private Bangladeshi airlines as well as Biman.
Pacific Bangladesh Telecom Limited, doing business as Citycell, was the oldest mobile operator of Bangladesh. It was one of the three oldest and pioneer telecommunications network companies in South Asia along with Etisalat of Sri Lanka and Paktel of Pakistan. It was the only mobile operator in the country using CDMA and EVDO technology. Citycell's total mobile subscriber base was 0.142 million as of August 2016. Citycell was owned by SingTel (44.54%), Pacific Motors (37.95%) and Far East Telecom (17.51%). It was the smallest mobile operator of Bangladesh in terms of subscribers. It was shut down due to failure of paying dues as ordered by the BTRC in 2016.
Bangladesh Machine Tools Factory Limited (BMTF) is a commercial automobile assembly plant of the Bangladesh Army. It mainly engaged to build and modify automobiles specially for defence industry. It is located at Gazipur, about 40 km from Dhaka.
Doel was a laptop assembled in Bangladesh as part of a circa 2011 national education program. It is assembled by Telephone Shilpa Sangstha. It was the first laptop made in Bangladesh. The first laptop produced was launched for US$130 in 2011. The OS used is Android or Microsoft Windows.
The electronics industry in Bangladesh is one of the fastest-growing industries in the country with great potential. Popular Bangladeshi electronics brands include Walton Group, Esquire Electronics, Transom Electronics, Best Electronics, Jamuna Electronics, Rangs Electronics, PRAN-RFL (Vision), MyOne Electronics Industries, Super Star Group, and Electra International. They assemble and sell products from foreign brands such as: Samsung, Whirlpool, LG, General, and Sharp.
Bangladesh–Kazakhstan relations refer to the bilateral relations between Bangladesh and Kazakhstan. The Bangladeshi President Iajuddin Ahmed said that the two countries enjoy cordial diplomatic relations and are working towards strengthen it further. Both the countries are members of Organisation of Islamic Cooperation. Neither country has a resident ambassador. In 2009, Kazakhstan announced it intended to open a consulate in Dhaka.
Bangladesh and Israel do not maintain diplomatic relations. Bangladesh said that it will not recognize Israel until there is an independent Palestine. Some reports and statistics revealed that Bangladesh and Israel maintain some trade relations indirectly and sometimes secretly, although the government always denies these allegations.
Forces Goal 2030 is a military modernization program of the Bangladesh Armed Forces which began in 2009 and revised in 2017, designed to the capabilities of the three services of the Bangladesh armed forces: the Army, the Navy and the Air Force. The primary focus of the modernization program is the reformation of the military organization, expansion of the forces, the transformation of the indigenous defense sector to support research and manufacturing, and acquisition of modern military weapons. The requirement for modernization was realized in the aftermath of 2008 Bangladesh–Myanmar naval standoff later resulting in Bangladesh's favour. One of the primary objectives of the modernization program is to develop a three-dimensional force capable of conducting multi-platform warfare.
